Summary
“Oh- Foolish. I didn’t, uh… didn’t see you there,” it’s sheepish and awkward and vulnerable, of all things (but Foolish doesn't mind, he likes to listen to the soft rumble of Sam’s voice).
“It’s okay. Don’t know how you could miss me, though…” Foolish forces out a grin, to try and de-escalate the situation and calm down Sam. He was panicky and acting flighty, sending swift glances over his shoulder and behind Foolish. Was he looking for someone? Was someone after him?
Foolish reaches out to give Sam’s bicep a gentle squeeze, and the man flinches so hard that Foolish just ends up reeling back.
Sam looks like he’s either going to punch someone or burst into flames, and Foolish knows very well that the only thing keeping him from bolting back to his islands was Foolish himself.
Or, memories of your youth, feelings under footsteps, and trying to comfort a friend who's lost himself to the weight of responsibility.

His friend is no longer entirely Sam. In his new exoskeleton, he is Warden. He wields Warden’s Will and Warden’s Mercy, and there’s something new and filmy covering his eyes. “You know,” says Quackity, “I never thought you’d end up as a cop.” Q has been detained before. He’s known a lot of guards.
“Does it bother you?” asks Sam with gloomy concern. “Do you want to try and…rehabilitate him?”
“No, and I’ve made that clear.” He scowls, leaning over the desk. “I want him dead.”
“But he’s locked up. He’s trapped, jailed, helpless, weak. He’s not a threat anymore.”
“No, Sam.” Quackity removes his helmet, shakes out his hair so that it falls to cover his scar. “Even from within the prison, he still has power. He’s controlling you, he’s changing you. He’s getting in your head - how can you not see this?”
“I haven’t changed.” He has a little brass clock on a string and he spins it around his finger. “If you think I have, then maybe you didn’t know me as well as you thought you did.”

The thought of someone caring for him again felt warm, it gave him the illusion of not being as lonely as he knew he was; but, if Quackity's way of giving him that warmth was to get him to collect himself, why did his hand always feel so freezingly cold whenever it struck his cheek?
Maybe the warmth was supposed to come along with the repugnant tears that followed.
