The sound took him to a trailer not far from the Dixon residence. Through the adrenaline and the throbbing headache, Daryl knew that there was something about this particular trailer that felt significant. He stepped over the short garden edging and onto the haphazardly arranged stone path. The ground cover crunched underfoot and it was only his gaze catching on the stroller folded up beside the door that made him realise. There was a baby here. Kid had cried so much since being brought home that Daryl’s old man had made a few threats about what he’d do to the baby and their momma if the noise didn’t cut out. The mom was young, a hell of a lot younger than she looked, but she hadn’t cowed down to Will Dixon. Too brave or too stupid. Those two often looked alike.
The baby was crying.
The baby was still alive.

"Help, help!" I shouted, swimming towards the Abraham Lincoln in desperation. My skirts and the steel harness encumbered me; they seemed glued to my body, and paralysed my movements. I was sinking! I was suffocating! The last of my strength was used to release myself of the clothing I was wearing. I took a great gulp of air then began to wriggle and rip myself free until I was left with my worn body underneath the veil of my cotton chemise. While I was already undignified, it broke a small piece of my aorta to think of the shame that would become of the crew should they find my nearly naked body floating in the cold, barren, sea. I breached the surface once more. "Help!"
...This work is as close to the original that I could muster, it is a gender-bent rewrite of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne. I have made an effort to honor the times as well as the sanctity of the original story. I grew up reading this story over and over again and I just feel that a female version of Pierre could do well. So I offer you: Perle Piata Aronnax.

Summary
Joel turns and peers cautiously down the alley. In the fading light he can make out three figures, teenage boys if he had to guess, in a semi-circle around a kneeling figure. Their head turns and Joel catches sight of a brown ponytail between the boys’ legs, a flash of a knife gripped in a hand.
One of them steps forward and kicks her in the shoulder, sending her sprawling backwards. She scrambles back to her feet, knife outstretched in front of her, teeth bared. If she wasn’t so goddamn small, Joel would think she was more than capable of handling herself against these guys, but they’ve each got probably half a foot and fifty pounds on her, and he finds himself walking closer.
