The weight of memories can't be quantified, but it's felt anyways. The pressure persists, and there really only ever were two options Keith knew of how to deal with it - push the memories away and let that pressure build until it threatens to burst, or be buried under them with no way to dig himself out.
But maybe, maybe, there's another option. One he'd never thought of. One he could find together with Lance.
Because life goes on, no matter how strongly the past nips at your heals. Maybe sometimes you need to let the past fall away, let it go - and maybe, sometimes, you need to face it.

Nai has a healthy interest in cowboys and spaghetti westerns. His favorite bar in San Francisco has a mechanical bull in it, and he goes there to drink away his work stress. Really, he doesn’t normally act like this, but he meets a Spicy Cool Ranch Dorito that is way too nice to him.
Nico has a lot of time on his hands during the winter, so he fills it working at his second favorite bar in San Francisco, which has a mechanical bull in it. Only because he spends the other 9 months of the year working at a ranch tucked into the hills around Los Angeles. He meets a very sloshed, very cute, very big man at the bar, and wonders what he's like sober.

“Cat got your tongue? Where’s your edge, Knives?”
Wolfwood chuckles to himself, but doesn’t push further. He draws away, and with it, Knives can finally breathe. The tension falls slack, and he slips a few inches on the bar stool. His hand drags his face to cover whatever terrible expression the alcohol prevents him from hiding.
This is exactly what Vash would want for him, isn’t it? A chance at an honest connection.
‘A friend,’ Vash had grinned, energy so very contrary to Nai’s insistent pout. ‘It couldn’t hurt, Nai. Give it a chance.’
Though he’s pretty sure the unspoken erection pressed up against his thigh leads them a little further than what a typical friendship would permit.
“One more round, then I’ll get the tab, boss. But after–” Wolfwood’s breath pitches lower. Hopeful. "Take me home will ya?"

The sharp jab of a needle in his arm brings Nico out of the convulsions. A cold sensation spreads from the puncture point, settling his body for a moment of relief. But then the heat spikes again, tenfold this time. He spasms as fire rips through his veins. The pain is neigh unbearable.
Conrad’s voice cuts in and out of Nico’s ears, “… might happen… suppressant… worsening the heat… alpha.”
Nico’s ears perk up at the word. He finds the edge of Conrad’s lab coat, gripping it tightly as he whines, “Please. A-Alpha.”
Legato’s nasally voice sounds. “There are none. Can’t we just sedate him?”
“There’s one,” Conrad says, putting the back of his hand to Nico’s forehead. “We might be out of other options.”
“No,” Legato retorts, “This is far below him. He would consider it impertinent.”
“Possibly. But I fear we might lose a valuable asset if not. He’s burning up.”
“So what if he dies. We can find another.”
A cool hand cups Nico’s cheek and he nuzzles into it. Conrad’s voice sounds far away, “Not like him we can’t. He’s the most compatible with the treatment. Starting from square one would set us back years. Fetch him, Bluesummers.”
