The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”

Summary
Mariana was a priest, as devout as he could be, to a God he had zero proof of ever existing. For his lifetime, he'd been led by a lie; a promise of an afterlife, to be unconditionally loved by some powerful supernatural being watching over him. He did not know anything else and was willing to see through the loneliness and anguish.
Charlie was a demon, who also happened to be deeply in love with Mariana. He had spent his lifetime trying to get to him, haunting his day-to-day life--And, oh, Mariana was very aware. It was just a matter of what it would take to get him to take the metaphorical apple, submit to his will, and abandon his faith in favor of Charlie's love. It was selfish, he knew, but what he also knew was that deep down, Mariana wanted it too.
But, what is love, if but a battle with the self? How long could Charlie stand to sit and wait for Mariana to push back his denial and stop forcing himself to believe in a lie?
The day that Charlie was finally allowed passage into the physical world, he knew it couldn't be long.
