“What’s wrong, J.J.?” Hayden asked, noticing it at the same moment as Shane. J.J. gaped, fish-mouthed and floundering, eyes wide and staring around the locker room as if any of them could explain the story that he still hadn’t shared. He had his phone in his hand, and Shane’s first thought was that maybe something had happened to his parents, or the younger sister he was always so proud of.
“The Centaurs’ plane,” J.J. said, hoarse. He was answering Hayden’s question, but his eyes found Shane’s. He swallowed hard. “It’s gone.”
“What do you mean, gone?” Shane asked, frowning. There was a faint ringing in his ears but it wasn’t yet a siren; he couldn’t understand what J.J. meant, and his ignorance protected him, just for a moment. “Like, somebody stole it?”
Hayden found his phone, scrambling it off of the shelf above his stall. His face went ashen when he unlocked it. “Oh, holy shit…”
“Not stolen,” J.J. said, shaking his head. “It’s gone, Cap. Vanished.”

He'd made it halfway through writing the first note before it felt suddenly far too pathetic. Was this seriously the legacy he wanted to leave behind? No one would talk about any of his wins if he killed himself now. He would be the failed Russian team captain of the 2014 Olympics who couldn't handle the job and offed himself about it. His father would probably follow him in death just to yell at him for embarrassing the family, and Russia, and everyone who had ever rooted for him.
And when he had been made captain in Boston, he had promised his Bears he would get them a cup. He couldn't just leave without doing that. Didn't want to leave and let people think he was a liar, or that he just gave up when things got hard, lazy, useless, stupid boy.
He tore up the note he'd begun, and began his second plan instead.

Shane goes stiff with fear when a hand lands on the crown of his head. “You have received your vocation as my conduit. Would you deny me?”
What was admonishment delivered by Teacher becomes condemnation out of the High Father’s mouth. Shane shakes his head.
“Answer me in word, and meet my eye as you do.”
The room is quiet enough to hear the pop of a candle wick. Knuckles white as he grips a blanket, Shane obeys. The reflection of flames in the High Father’s eyes seems so real.
“I would not,” Shane whispers, “deny you, High Father. I am only following what I’ve been taught. To stay pure of body and spirit, and to, t-to serve you.”
“To serve me.” The repeated phrase almost sounds approving.
Shane grabs onto the assumed approval like it’s a life preserver. “Anything,” he promises. “I would do anything for you.”
