What Arthur knows: Merlin, his clumsy and foolish servant, is actually quite smart. He’s also loyal, and brave, and in many ways the reason Arthur has so many good people in his life.
The goal: Make Merlin realize how important he is to Arthur, no matter how stubborn he's clearly chosing to be about it.
What Arthur does not know, yet: Merlin has magic. Also they're very slightly a little bit in love.
It's going to take them a while to figure it all out. Meanwhile the knights have known for ages, Gwen figures it out pretty quick, and pretty much all of Camelot has also known ever since that weird peasant stumbled through the gates and challenged the Prince all those years ago.

Arthur does. "Or I one who could be so stupid!" Merlin stops. Arthur's so close he can sense the heat of Arthur's tension-strung body. "Tell me, Merlin, do you know how to walk on your knees?"
There is… something he'd like to do before he leaves Camelot. Perhaps the Goddess will have the privilege to grin maniacally and point at him saying he proved her right, that he can't escape his destiny, and every choice he makes will lead him back to Arthur. But that's far from the truth. He's a free man now, and every step he takes is based on his feelings alone, unrestrained from the shackles of divine beings and centuries old premonitions. And he's always, always, wanted to put Arthur in his place. Now he can.
Merlin straightens his posture, rising to full height. Now he will.
He looks back and smirks, his chest nearly touching Arthur's.
"Do you?"
Hopeless after Arthur's death, Merlin is sent back in time to when Arthur and him first met. Things don't turn out as innocently as before.

Summary
"It’s driving you mad, isn’t it?” Gwaine asked, and instead of arguing, Merlin was silent. After a few moments, he turned around to face Gwaine, eyes narrowing with caution. “Merlin, I am in no way telling you to give up what you feel for Arthur. But I think you need a way to let off a bit of the tension... Between trusting friends.”
They shared a silence. Though Merlin was clearly confused, Gwaine worried more that the booms of his heart echoed through the chamber. He pinpointed the exact moment realization seeped into Merlin--eyes widening, eyebrows scrunched, mouth open in words of surprise he couldn't yet form.
“Only if and when you want,” Gwaine assured, when he could still convince himself he could overlook his affections for Merlin's sake.
Now, as Merlin moans into Gwaine's mouth, Gwaine wonders how he ever managed to believe his offer would leave him anything but fucked--in both senses of the word.
