Zuko confronting Iroh: “You always told me that the important thing in life is to do good. To be kind to others, even if you’ve been hurt. Because those good deeds will circle back around to you.”
“And I never understood why you were so obsessed with that,” Zuko continued. “Because it couldn’t apply to you. You’ve been the cause of such atrocities in this war. Surely you couldn’t actually believe that there was room for you to become better, much less to gain forgiveness.” He shifted, his robe swooshing over the cold stone beneath him. “But now I know why.”
Iroh smiled.
“You are delusional,” Zuko said.
Iroh frowned, caught off guard. This was not what he was expecting. Where was Zuko going?
“Well, not completely,” the prince rambled on. He seemed to gain more energy as he talked, in reverse to how these visits usually went. Yet he did not raise his voice too much, as if self-conscious of his own words. Afraid, even. “You know you don’t deserve happiness. But you found a loophole, at least in your mind. A ridiculous way to gain redemption, by proxy.”
“You thought,” Zuko continued, “that if you managed to get me on ‘the good path’, you’d somehow gain from it. That someone would pat you on the back and forgive you for your past mistakes. But that is unfair, Uncle. Because your destiny is not my responsibility, and you should not be living through me.”
A shaky breath, echoed silently.
“You and I both deserve to rot in our misery. There is no hope for us.” And without another word, slowly – judging by the sounds, possibly dragging himself – Zuko exited the chamber, leaving his uncle alone.

If Zuko was back at his father’s house, no one would care. His father barely meets his eye except to punish him; whatever that entails is up to Ozai’s mood and temper that day. And Azula... Well, Zuko doesn’t really know. She’d probably poke fun at him, add it onto the list of countless other reasons why she doubts she and he are related.
The point is, Zuko probably would’ve gotten away with this. Scars, like the one on his eye put there by his father and the countless ones on his arm done by himself, are a punishment. A punishment that Zuko deserves.
This laissez-faire attitude doesn’t seem to run in family blood, though, and going by Uncle Iroh’s face at the moment, Zuko has a bad feeling he won’t be getting away with this.

Summary
Zuko just wants to live his life in peace, but after a horrible fire broke out in his home when he was eleven years old, the gossip mill around town got out of control and blamed Zuko for the fire that permanently scarred his face. A few years later, when their school burns down, several students claim he was the cause of it, officially branding him as the town firebug.
Now at the age of 24, working in his Uncle's cafe, Zuko is burdened by an accusation he was innocent of and is followed around by claims of arson when a string of suspicious fires breaks out over the span of several years. Officer Zhao is determined to arrest the young man on these unfounded charges, meanwhile Sokka and the rest of the Southern Water Fire Department believe Zuko's pleas of innocence. “I don't know Bato,” Hakoda whispered, “Why don't you head back towards the house, alright? I'll meet you there in just a few minutes and then we’ll figure out what to do.”
“We have to go to the police.” There was nothing else they could do really. They only had so much power as concerned parents, and they did all they could by themselves. They needed help.
“We’ll go to the police station once we’re together, but for now just head home.”
“Okay.”
“I’m only a few minutes away.”
“Okay.” Bato restarted the car.
Hakoda hung-up with a final promise of seeing him soon.
He started driving. He didn't know it then, but he passed the corner his children laid pressed against an hour prior, heads bleeding and a foreign drug coursing through their veins. But he didn’t know it. How could he? He should’ve taken them this morning.He kept driving.

The pair go to Ba Sing Se High, Zuko as a senior and Azula as a sophomore. There, Zuko meets the Gaang and falls for the loveable and excitable Sokka. Azula on the other hand sets her sights on Ty Lee and Mai.
Zuko and Aang are autistic because I said so, and Sokka has adhd. Also, Toph is nonbinary and uses she/they pronouns. -
