Summary
It was always an interesting experience to spend the night at someone else's house; there was a sort of vulnerability in it. To see your friends outside of the usual parameters of your friendship, to grew sleepy in their presence, to see them in their sleep clothes as you wished them goodnight. Most times, you and the host would retire to bed in one of two ways: either they'd go to their room or join you in the living room. Either way, you'd sleep in a sleeping bag or on the couch, if not a guest room.
That's the kind you had been accustomed to, of course. And what you had been expecting when you were invited over to Wally's home one evening. Sleeping over on his couch as you had done before.

You meandered down the well worn dirt path that wound all the way through Home, swinging your arms as you looked up and around at the sky and neighbourhood. It was quiet-- it seemed like no one else was awake yet, or out of their houses at the very least. Still snuggled up in their beds perhaps.
Eyes trailing back to the path, you stopped short as they landed on something very odd. You rubbed your eyes and blinked to clear them, but it stayed-- or rather, he stayed.
Wally lay on the ground ahead of you, completely prone and limp. The hearts on the soles of his shoes were visible, the top of his feet pressed flat against the ground.

You looked back at Wally. He was watching the clouds as they drifted above the two of you, listening quietly to your story. But he turned as you did, and his eyes widened just a touch. He lifted a hand and pointed at himself.
"Like me?"
You smiled and laughed, nodding earnestly.
"Yeah, like you!"
He tipped his head to the side, looking down at the ground. He stared intently, as if trying to fit the comparison into his view of himself.
"Oh."

You held the phone in your lap, staring down at the dial as you lay tucked in your bed. The brass bottom of the device had sat so long on your legs that it was no longer cold, and the plastic was warm under the spots you had laid your fingers.
It wasn't exactly nervewracking, per say, to break the longstanding tradition and become a sender, not just a receiver-- you just realized you weren't quite aware of what Wally's number was. He had certainly told you before, hadn't he? As had all the neighbours? You were sure you had a note somewhere with everyone's on it... Shuffled away somewhere in your house, possibly between bigger slips of paper or crunched up at the bottom of the "everything" drawer in your kitchen.
You stared, and stared, and then finally blinked because your eyes had gotten dry. Oh, if you didn't do this quickly you'd lose your nerve; or perhaps Wally would even call you before you had the chance to turn a single number.
Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, you lifted the handset off the hook and put it to your ear.

"Oh, you." he replied, voice going airy with relief. His pupils flickered back and forth, as if trying to find you in the nights murk-- you lowered your hand as you realized he couldn't see it.
The felt above his eyes creased after a moment, smile shrinking just a touch.
"You shouldn't be out this late."

More often than not he did not spend the energy attempting to understand them, letting the odd sensations come and go without voicing them.
So, when the odd sensations started to occur more frequently-- when they started to manifest, to grow, to bloom-- it wasn't much of a cause for concern. Maybe that was just a part of it. Maybe that was just how feelings worked. How friendship worked. How love worked.
And he believed as such, even as the flowers began ripping through his seams.
