    The function of a family was new and foreign, yet also very familiar. Unlike Casey’s ass of a father, Master Splinter never yelled. He calculated every word before he said it. He was direct, deliberate, gentle. It was a gentleness that Raph had trouble adjusting to, but eventually he came to crave Splinter’s calmness, so strongly contrasting his own stirring thoughts. 

    Leonardo, though. That guy was an ass. A stuck-up idiot who hung on Father’s every word and hardly left room to think for himself. But he was dedicated. He fought like a demon, the fire in his eyes burning with each slash of his sword. Raph respected him. Understood him. 

    Michelangelo was also easy to read: another idiot, too innocent, too optimistic. Fast, too. Insanely talented, more-so than even Leo (though Raph would never admit it to either of them). Mikey made sense, because you knew what to expect from the guy. 

    Raph liked to think he was good at figuring people out. A quick learner, right?

    But Donatello…that guy was a pickle and a half.

    All siblings fight, it just fact, can't try and change it. Normally fights don't last too long, a hour, a day, a week, maybe a month if they're petty. They never last long because the roles everyone plays balances everything out. But… what happens when the role feels to big, when the fight goes on too long?
    Who will be the first to snap?

    TL;DR: boys are fighting, and the carefully crafted family dynamic of leader, muscle, brain, and fun-guy, slowly breaks down. Chaos ensues :)

    Raphael was trembling, already tearing up again. He was shaking with the force of his growl, and his eyes only seemed to sharpen when they locked with Splinter's.

    Leonardo's snarling had been in-the-moment, defensive paranoia. Splinter was interchangeable from everyone else— all he had wanted was to get away, to hide, not to hurt. Raphael knew exactly who he was looking at, and he was furiously protective anyway.

    He was not afraid to hurt him if he had to, to protect the boys that it had always been Splinter's duty to protect.

    Splinter could not help but feel like he had done something irreconcilably wrong.

    (or: the boys are hit by pollen that heightens their paranoia. to take care of them, splinter is forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about them; and more importantly, about himself.)

    Michelangelo on the other hand.. he took after Leo a little too much. No one batted an eye when he started pulling the same stunts.

     

    Or, five times these two dummies sacrificed themselves, and the one time it stuck.
