Dave is stressed. Balancing two jobs, University, and caring for his kid brother is hard enough as it is. But doing it alone? That's what makes it impossible.
Jack is living his dream life in a place he doesn't want to be in. New York is nice, sure--but it's not Santa Fe. But he's got friends here, a nice place to stay and a couple of jobs that pay well. But it's still not enough to convince him that he is where he needs to be.
But Dave's been coming into the cafe where Jack works lately, and there just might be something here to show them both that life is worth living right where they are.

Davey still had absolutely no idea how to handle those feelings. It wasn’t quite the problem during the strike. Davey was kind of too busy surviving during those days. But after the strike, when he spends every day selling his papers with Jack, his emotions seem to grow stronger every single day. He knew he shouldn't be in love with a boy, he simply couldn't be! It would destroy his whole reputation, his parents' love for him, his friendship with Jack… his whole damn life would be ruined.
With the strike settled, everything should be going quite well for Davey Jacobs. There’s one small, but honestly huge problem, Davey finds himself having feelings he shouldn’t have for his best friend…
Jack wants to know what got Davey feeling so down lately.

Summary
David has always had an 'Ideal Plan' for senior year. That 'Ideal Plan' is to lay low, not draw attention to himself, and make it out of Duane High unscathed.
But then, David is roped into auditioning for the school musical.
And then, David meets Jack Kelly.
Suddenly, the 'Ideal Plan' is thrown out the window, and David and Jack are left grasping at straws for any sense of normalcy.All they can do is hold on tight and wait for curtain call.

“Jack-” David started, his earlier resolve crumbling quickly in the midst of all that silence and the way Jack’s breaths puffed out steadily beside him. He felt so small, minuscule, that he felt like were he to confess anything in that moment, it would cause no wide disruptions, no consequences, just a simple statement of fact, as gentle as an autumn leaf falling from a tree.
Spoilers:
Davey's in a coma where he repeats the same day. It's both a frustrating time loop that he doesn't know how to break out of and also a nearly perfect fantasy world his subconscious came up with. Being in love with Jack in both reality and his dreams doesn't help either.

Two pairs of unfocused, milk-white eyes. The putrid stench of rapidly decaying flesh. Gunshots, blood, the weight of a gun in his own two hands. His parents' faces.
These are the things David remembers from that day.
There were, of course, other things that had happened that day; that morning, his mother had made pancakes for breakfast. His father had played an ABBA song loudly as he cleaned the dishes. His sister and brother had bickered about something-or-other.
David, however, does not remember any of this.
OR: Stuck in a zombie apocalypse, Davey makes some hard decisions to keep his family alive. And maybe makes a few friends along the way.
