At the same time, Ava muttered a similar sentiment under her breath but with a more colourful use of language. Until now, Bucky had kept his head firmly down and remained deep in his thoughts. From the second they stepped out onto that stage, in front of the press, it seemed like he was in a state of shock. But he finally raised his eyes to shoot Walker a stormy look. Whichever one of their reactions was effective, it didn’t matter, because something successfully shut John up.
They rode for a few more minutes in silence. Then, Alexei cleared his throat.
“Walker is right.” He said.
Without lifting his head, Bucky murmured to nobody in particular: “That’s a first.”

John never thought of himself as talented.
Growing up in rural Georgia, there wasn't much around but the school and the Chevron gas station up a few miles from his house that he would park his dad's old two-seater truck at and squint at who was working the counter through the window before heading inside. His buddy, Shawn, wouldn't ID him for the Kodiak dip if he paid in cash and let the guy take a few dollars off the top.
His high school wasn't anything special either. Mostly outdoor and the majority of funding going towards the football field— not that he ever cared as he was the captain of the football team anyways. He was always fascinated during the shows the band did halfway through the games. The loud instruments, the formations, the flying flags, even the uniforms had him curious.
John's father told him once that he would rather have a pathetic football player son than a faggot trumpet player one. He never brought up joining the school's band again.or,

This was a stupid idea. Even if he did consider making an account… what would his content be? Who would it be aimed towards? A name would have to be made, and John lacked any creative bone in his body, preferring order and being told what to do.
It had to be something witty, enough to allude to his secret identity, to pull an audience in. Show the allure of his blue eyes and blonde hair, a stereotypical assumption of what Captain America should be, what he should’ve been. John’s skin rises at this new coming of himself, a conglobation of Captain America and US Agent, formed into something perverted, used for pleasure.
He starts typing, one deliberate key at a time, stopping when he finishes the word, only to press the backspace and add in brackets.

Summary

Between Alexei sneaking casseroles, Yelena heckling like a little sister, Ava’s rare but pointed check-ins, Bob drifting in like a storm front and quieting the room just to stand in John’s orbit (because John’s steady hands and warm hugs anchor the Void better than any drug), and Sam trying to play wingman, John slowly learns he’s allowed to want things for himself.
Bucky just hopes he notices before the whole world figures it out first.
It turns out love isn’t a mission, and family isn’t a unit—it’s a branch that grows, if you let it.
