Its hair is thick and wiry as you pet it. “Holy shit,” you whisper. “It thinks I’m a jadeblood.”
“Or a lusus,” Kanaya says slyly. You roll your eyes.
“It can smell that I’m a troll, Kanaya.”
“If it can smell you’re a troll, it can smell that you’re not a jadeblood. We don’t know that prehistoric trolls didn’t sometimes become lusii.”
“Limebloods used to share similar duties to jades on Beforus. Maybe it thinks that’s what I’m doing.”
“What are you - oh, that’s right, you are a limeblood.” She pauses, her brows drawn together in thought. “Wait. That is essentially what you’re doing. There’s no Mother Grub to tend -”
“But limebloods didn’t tend to the Mother Grub,” you answer softly, gazing down at the wriggler demanding more pets. You scritch it behind the horns. “That was the job of the jades. The limebloods tended to the children, until they could find a lusus.”
Kanaya stares into space for a moment. Then a massive smile stretches across her face, like you haven’t seen her wear in a while. “And here we are. The Mother Grub is young, and I’m taking care of her. But there are children, and they need a limeblood.” Her deep green eyes are full of emotion. “This. This is what Echidna meant. What you were born for.”
You’d almost forgotten Echidna’s prophecy. Prophecies don’t have the same certainty as causal loops, so they’ve never meant as much to you. But Kanaya has always held such faith in her denizen; she was never very religious before, so you suspect meeting the snake goddess under such traumatic circumstances may have triggered something in her.
“I was born... to be an ectobiologist,” you deadpan.

Eridan Ampora is one of the few refugees from the ashes of the Alternian Empire. They all sit aboard a hijacked warship renamed The Signless, bred to house about 1200 something trolls but only carrying a skeleton crew of about 500. The only crew the Signless has ever had in the last dozen sweeps has been 440 wrigglers who hadn’t been picked up to go off world yet; the remaining 60 had been planetside retirees. Half of them hadn’t even reached their maturation ceremony yet.
Eridan hadn’t. Him and his other broodmates had been only 8 sweeps at the time.

i don't know how to describe the concept of this fic other than a erisol almost-pacific-rim au??? Eridan is the navigator for a huge refugee ship, Sollux is one of the best pilots. They can't stand each other and shenanigans ensue.
