Summary
This series is a movie canon compliant AU depicting the following story:
Mario and Luigi's parents left the Mushroom Kingdom to move to Brooklyn for their own safety. You can headcanon it's because they were escaping the Shroob invasion if you wish, but for now, that will be neither confirmed or denied unless I see a way to incrorporate it in.
Upon arriving in Brooklyn, they got stopped by immigration that resulted in them putting Baby Mario and Luigi in the foster system until their parents could secure the proper documentation.
But Mario, who despite only being older by 1 minute and 23 seconds (83 seconds, in reference to the year of the first Super Mario Bros game), understands their parents are going away, and he needs to look out for his brother.
When he finally understands what really happened, he was faced with a choice: Spend all his time trying to track down their parents and leave Luigi behind, or keep Luigi on the straight and narrow until they age out of the system.
He picks Luigi, and the series begins several years after the fact.
