Mike finally starts getting his life together again just before they're all ready to leave after getting all of his feelings out into his writing and he goes to will for help in finishing it. Together they paint and write a new ending for the story whilst rediscovering themselves along the way.

“Looks like I bit you.” Will tilts his head to get a better look. All Mike can do is stare at him. His fluffy hair at the front, clumped pieces at the back where he’d slid his fingers in a mere few minutes before. His pretty green eyes that look hazel or even brown in this light, the dark circles he gets when he drinks framing them like intricate paintings. A satisfied, bloody smile.
Mike isn’t satisfied. He swallows thickly, choking down the words 'don’t you want more?'
Or: Will dresses as a vampire for a college halloween party, but Mike thinks his costume isn’t bloody enough. Will lets him fix it. Mike goes into a crisis.

It’s teasing, suggestive when he wiggles his eyebrows, and it’s so unexpected that Will lets out a surprised laugh, unabashed, and it’s so easy, how the tension falls away, and it’s only them again.
“You’re ridiculous,” Will shakes his head, smiling, but Mike looks proud of himself anyway.
He points out, “I don’t hear you complaining.”
Will scoffs, nudging at him with an elbow. “Whatever,” he smoothly replies. Mike grins.

With the Byers-Hopper family finally visiting Hawkins and the Upside-Down seemingly under wraps, it looks like for the first time since ‘82, it’s going to be a truly happy holiday. Now all Mike needs to do is wrap presents, host guests, and keep Will from finding out about his feelings.
If only he wasn’t so distracted by a sudden onslaught of headaches and ultra-realistic nightmares…

“Who’s that?” Holly whispered to Mike, though if she was trying to be subtle, she didn’t exactly succeed.
Will laughed, a little confused. He knew he had never talked that much to Holly, but she had definitely known who he was.
“I’m Will. Will Byers. Do you remember me? I used to come over here a lot.”
Not taking her eyes off of Will, Holly leaned into Mike’s knees to whisper closer to his ear. “He’s handsome now,” she said, completely audibly.

Steve Harrington was a real hero. He was this seasoned interdimensional warrior who would jump through interdimensional portals with no hesitation and who could kill interdimensional bats without a gun and who didn’t seem all that afraid to venture deep into an interdimensional demon’s lair to fight him face-to-face. He would throw his body in front of any sort of monstrosity to protect his kid-friends, and Eddie knew from Henderson that he’d done it a lot; he’d guided and protected and taken beatings for those kids time and time again, and never ran away. Never took the easy way out.
And, on top of that, of course, he was a handsome motherfucker.
Eddie, on the other hand, was no hero. Nope. No sir.
He sighed and took a drag of his cigarette.
OR
Eddie has a certain preconception of what heroism looks like, but maybe with Steve's help, Eddie can find a way to be brave, do the right thing, and make it out of the Upside Down alive. (And also maybe fall in love, along the way.)

Will wanted to nestle close to Mike, to feel his arm around him as they looked up at their galaxy together. He wanted to pour into Mike, somehow tell him what it had been like to be stuck there, to miss everyone, miss Mike so much. To miss himself now that he was back but not the same as he used to be. Tell him how much he needed Mike, how grateful he was that Mike was next to him right now.
Instead, he allowed himself one more long second of looking at Mike, caught up in his glittering eyes, then turned his head back to look at the stars.
“Thanks, Mike,” he whispered.
