Summary
Castiel is assigned a new human hunter partner in his investigations regarding the murders of his fellow angels. Both parties are reluctant to work together, and Castiel has growing suspicions which border on blasphemy. But there's something about Dean Winchester, something Castiel inherently trusts. Angels don't do leaps of faith— the danger of falling is an angel's deepest fear, afterall— but Castiel runs his fingers along the ashy remains of another dead sister and knows he can't do this alone. He just hopes his trust in the righteous soul assigned to him is not misplaced.

“I’m—my name is Castiel,” the man—Castiel—gasps.
“Who are you?” Dean repeats. He shakes him a little for emphasis, knocking Castiel’s head against the ground. “Where is—what are you doing here?”
“I’m a hunter,” he answers quickly. “I’m looking for—John Winchester. He was supposed to be here.”When John Winchester goes missing, Dean knows he must do whatever he can to find him. The last thing he expects is to run into another hunter chasing the same lead. Castiel is a mystery, but against his better judgement Dean finds himself drawn to him. If nothing else, hopefully he can help Dean find his dad.

When the first attacks began, Castiel locked himself in his house and waited for the government to rescue him. The last thing he expects is for a green-eyed stranger to show him the world has changed and maybe for the better.
The two set off on a thrilling adventure to reach the West Coast and find Dean’s brother. Along the way they meet some new people, reunite with some old friends and witness some wild things, but as long as they have each other, no obstacle is too great. Not even the deadly virus that has taken over the entire world.

In Spokane, Washington, Dean and Castiel finish a case with a powerful witch. Ready to go back home, they start driving back to the bunker, only to find that a big purple shield is blocking their way, not letting them leave.
Forced to remain in that town, Dean and Castiel go to a cabin, where they will have to stay until the two of them find a way to break the spell with the help of Sam and Eileen, who are in the bunker, unable to reach them.
In normal circumstances, Dean wouldn’t mind being stuck in such a lovely place with his best friend, but he is secretely in love with Cas and there is only one bed, so things aren’t going to be that easy for Dean.

“Thank you, Sam.” Cas smiles at the man in front of him, trying hard to offer comfort even though Cas hadn’t been able to explain that he was having a problem. “You’re a good man. I love you, too.”
Sam blinks, for some reason surprised by this response. Cas thinks about how Dean would react in this moment, but Cas doesn’t think making fun of Sam’s hair or calling him a hippie would quite communicate what he intends. Cas hasn’t mastered Dean’s ability to make insults affectionate, and he doesn’t really think this is the moment to try.
“Uhm. Thank you?” Sam says, his tone questioning. Cas plods on anyway. Sam has been the object of Dean’s love for as long as he has existed. A different love, yes, but still, Sam is perhaps the one person who can help Cas find a way to respond.

Dean approaches it carefully with a furrowed brow and half-raised hackles.

And the orb is glowing out sweet and white like it could easily be used to keep away the dark in a child’s nursery. It’s so welcoming. Like Dean could just reach out, out, and catch that gentleness in his hands without any sort of consequence.

But Dean is too bright to deserve all of Castiel’s dark and the artist is determined not to let them become anything more than good friends. But Castiel soon learns that Dean has other plans.
