While Light’s hunger for liberation and separation persists, L develops another type of hunger, an obsession he claims has just to do with his hyperfixation on the case. There definitely weren’t any other reasons for his frequent longing glances and his insistence on proximity to Light… Right?
Misa’s cluelessness and irritation regarding the handcuffs only pushes the two men to a dinner reservation together… as well as a hotel room together.

"Here, Ryuuzaki," Souichiro said. "Take the notebook."
But L did not take the notebook. He almost did. But, believing in that intuition, and his own strength, L reluctantly shook his head. "No," he said. Light tried to reach across from him and grab it, and L all but slapped his hand away. "Put the notebook into an evidence bag and take it back to the task force headquarters. We need to clear this scene before anyone gets hurt."
If Souichiro hesitated, it was for a moment so brief that no one could detect it. "Of course, Ryuuzaki. I'll bring Higuchi to the police car."
"Are you insane?" Light demanded as Souichiro walked away. "We need to examine that notebook!"
"We'll do so later." L sipped his coffee, still hot, but starting to cool. What he didn't say was, I'll do so by myself, although that was what he meant. Because there was one other thing L knew as well as he knew Light, as well as he knew himself.
He could not let Light become Kira again.

Light doesn't get his memories back in the helicopter.

Summary
Light has been up since 5 AM working on the investigation with L, and now it's midnight. Light is exhausted from working for 19 hours straight, but whilst being chained to L, there wasn't much he could do about it. L starts a conversation to stop Light falling asleep, leading to L sharing his fear of dolls, especially cabbage patch kids. Light jokes that L looks like a cabbage patch kid after Light finds a picture, but L takes the joke to heart and takes offence to it. 😬
