Summary
To young lord Hans Capon of Pirkstein, no matter whether he was the son of a village blacksmith or a noble's bastard, Henry was no more than a dog.
The moment the dog dared to disobey, all he was good for was to be kicked, and all he could hope for is that the lord, in his infinite noble wisdom, wouldn't deem him rabid—and put him down.
Let it be so, then. If he was an unruly dog, hungering after something he had no right to, then he was already damned. God can't help him.
His soul was already lost—the leash to it in different hands than God's.Henry tries to bury all the conflicting feelings about his lord somewhere deep. But was born under an unlucky star, after all: the world won't let him keep these things buried for too long. A study of Henry's state of mind after Laboratores until For Victory!; exploration of his own fears and desires he struggles to understand. Canon compliant, extended: filling in the gaps. Misunderstood religious misery, self-discovery, shameless dog motif, power imbalance and crossing the class divide; two absolute fools in horrible, horrible love.

Summary
As befits a Roman nobleman of his age, Hans Capon is about to embark on his first military campaign, leaving the great city of Rome for Gaul to join the army of Julius Caesar, in pursuit of glory, adventure and the future long planned for him by his family.
Meanwhile Henry is leading a peaceful life as a son of a blacksmith in a small Celtic village near Bibracte. Unbeknownst to him, his life is about to be turned upside down when his home is destroyed by an invasion of Germanic tribes.
The two of them are brought together by the ever unpredictable fate and swept into a world of war, political intrigue, ambition, friendship and love.

“Used to be,” Henry offers a smile he hopes is reassuring as he turns the leathery talisman in his palm. “Supposed to guard you from bad luck.”
“Oh, it didn’t do a very good job now, did it?” Hans’ eyes find his. “You and your birds, Hal… Nightingales and robins and yellowhammers.”
“My lord.”
“Promise me, hm?” Hans smiles. “You’ll think of me each time you think of birds.”
“Hans-”
“I reckon that’ll be plenty,” the young lord smiles again: the trickle of blood from his temple runs down his cheek. “It will work better to guard you, too, from any harm and any bad luck.”
“Hans, you need to stay awake. Please.”
“Maybe I’ll even haunt you, eh?” Something akin to a laugh erupts from his chest in a short, meagre burst. “Better than Toth, too, I promise.”After Suchdol and all the pain and tenderness it brought, Henry of Skalitz and his lord Hans Capon of Pirkstein steal some time for themselves: as summer dies and turns to autumn, and to winter cold, they choose to court each other with great honesty and love.
Even if they wear different names and play the riskiest game of pretend Bohemia has ever seen.

After the events of Suchdol, Henry and Hans find themselves at an impasse, neither willing to start the conversation pertaining to the newest aspect of their relationship. Upon arriving, he meets Henry, a knight of the Teutonic Order who is staying at the monastery after returning from war. The man is praised by Abbot Jan as a paragon of discipline and restraint.
Naturally, Hans gets the urge to tease and toy with Henry if only to make his stay at Sedletz a little less boring. However, he doesn’t expect himself to catch feelings for Henry.
