Reassignment can be requested after one year, but Taemin had managed to last seven and a half months in the military band before his throat began closing up every time he was expected to sing. There’s not much more than a year left to go.
He suffers a grim sort of amusement to the idea that he had to train for three years to be an idol, but five days is enough to unleash him on the nation’s children. Especially with his - what had the press release said? ‘Symptoms of depression and panic disorder’. Taemin thinks that if he was a parent, he wouldn’t want someone like that looking after his kids.
(Or: Taemin is in recovery. Taemin is in love. Taemin is doing his best to figure out how to love himself again, before he starts doing anything about that).

Before the younger man manages to snatch it out of his hands, his friend already studies the particular characters that absolutely do not spell Lee Taemin, and neither does the number 88. “Taemin.”
It’s like a warning. A slightly worried warning, with a small frown that would look funny with Kibum’s red hair and blue hat if Taemin did not want to bury himself six feet under right now.
“I thought it was mine,” he says, avoiding Kibum’s gaze. “I can’t throw it out anyway, it’s a… relic. From high school.”

This fic is inspired by the Park Chan Wook film "I'm a cyborg". It's centered around Taemin, a sweet kid who thinks he's a cyborg. He won't eat because he's scared that food will break his mechanisms, so he tries to charge himself via batteries. One day he accidentally electrocutes himself and get's put in a mental institution where he meets Jongin. Jongin is...complicated. His biggest fear is that he is going to fade into a dot, and he's a kleptomaniac as a result. Jongin doesn't just steal possessions though, he believes he can steal people's personalities as well.
