“I dunno. Maybe we’re just meant to be.”
Stede beams, tipping up to kiss Ed again and again and again.

Summary
It’s the summer of 1959, and classics professor Stede Bonnet is determined to become a new man. He’s made two monumental changes so far: he’s resigned his position at the University of Chicago, where he has taught for his entire career, and he’s left his wife Mary, to whom he has been married for nine years. Now he’s off to the only place in the United States where you can get a no-fault divorce: the deserts of Nevada. He’s checking in to a so-called Divorce Ranch just outside of Reno, where he’ll spend the requisite six weeks establishing residency. After that, it’s off to California to assume his new teaching position and his new life.
It's the summer of 1959. Ed Teach has been living in Reno since he was a teenager. He's a radio DJ, an artist, a handyman and a fixture of the community, particularly popular in the underground gay nightlife scene that is still recovering from the brutal vice raids of the McCarthy era.

Summary
“Thank you, by the way,” Stede adds, even though his heart is sort of in his throat about it. It’s not that he thinks it was wrong of Ed to punch the guy, or that he’s not grateful to be defended so fiercely. He loves when Ed gets all huffy and protective. It just feels a little different when your best friend punches a man into the appetizer table for insulting you and you also know you’ve been in love with him for thirty years. (The best friend, not the appetizer man.)
It’s also hard not to feel just a little guilty about the whole thing when you’re on your knees in the bathroom with a first aid kit spilled around you, watching that best friend’s face pinch up in an attempt not to wince when you first take his hand in yours.

Summary
“Shit,” Ed says.
Stede’s already across the floor before Ed can even move, taking a knee beside Ari to tilt his head back, scooping sprung-loose curls of hair from his face so he can press the back of his hand to his forehead.
“Is he sick?” Alma asks, cross-legged on the sofa, eyes still fixed on the book in her lap.
Removing his hand from Ari’s forehead, Stede lifts him up instead. He brings him in close, pressing his cheek to Ari’s, feeling his temperature.
At Stede’s side, Louis sneezes.
“Shit,” Ed repeats, and it’s all downhill from there.

Summary
Ed couldn't say he was surprised when he and Stede were unceremoniously dumped in the sand on an uninhabited spit of an island, just as he wasn't particularly surprised when Stede's crew had jumped them in their sleep and tied them up in ropes.
And now it seemed like the crew's loyalties to both men had worn thin, deciding to rid themselves of either of them rather than live with them both.
Fair enough. He was sure sailing under their command had become insufferable.
***
In which Ed and Stede haven't stopped bickering since Stede returned to the Revenge, so the crew dumps them on an island until they can kiss and make up.

Summary
He returns to his cabin, cooler in the shadows below the ship. It’s a careful evening, the sweetest of all. The healing matter of oil on his scar tissue; the hands of a lover on the knots in his back and legs. Fucking excellent.
Stede calls it something like a work-life balance.
Ed calls it finally catching a fucking break.
They both know it runs a little deeper than that. Power and choice, freedom and self-forging. A lifetime and heritage of creativity and suffering and a host of being treated as wrong on both their shoulders in different forms.
Happiness feels like the perfect cap on his bottled life of ship-burning. ‘They’ will not be loved as he is loved. They will not love as he loves in return either: full, passionate, comfortable. This great capacity he has for adoration, a precious thing.
Finally, finally.
or, five times The Revenge is becalmed (or beached) and Ed realises he's not quite alone to deal with it anymore.
(+ one time Stede's out of his depth.)

Summary
“I don’t think we’re going to make it back tonight,” Ed shouts backwards through the storm.
Stede knows that’s true, and he’s been afraid of saying it, but now the words are just— out there, and they have to deal with them.
“What do we do instead?” Stede asks him, voice lifted up over the pound of the wind, the whip of the rain, the deluge that soaks from above and sends their horse sliding in the mud torn up beneath her hooves.
There’s a moment where Ed doesn’t answer. Stede has his face pressed to his back, his arms wound tightly around him, clinging to him as they ride through the rain. If Ed had spoken, he’d at least feel the rumble of his words through his body, if he didn’t hear whatever it was he actually said.
It figures, honestly. The first time they’ve tried to just— spend a bit of time alone, for a little while, in a long time, and this happens. Of course, it would.

“What do you want me to do with your face?”
Ed can think of several things. He has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep himself from letting out a fucking giggle. Is he going to become someone who giggles, too? Iz might actually die. “Your call, Captain, this is obviously your thing.” And then, only because he can’t help himself: “Do whatever you want to me.”
“Oh! Well. That’s—well,” Stede stammers, turning a lovely shade of pink right before Ed’s eyes. Okay, that may have been a bit too much, then. Oops.

Summary
Ed's tattoos have stories to tell.
----
“Now, close your eyes. Try not to think about anything.”
Stede wonders what kind of game this is, exactly. Ed’s skin is warm as ever under his hand and it’s silly, but he fancies he can feel the small crosses and pin-prick stars as warmer still, heating up against his palm.
The pulse in Ed’s thumb beats in time with the pulse in Stede’s wrist.
Ed starts to hum. It’s a low rumble, gently swooping between deep tones; the design under Stede’s hand gets hotter and hotter. It feels red and sharp. Stede feels the vibration of Ed’s humming inside him as though it’s coming from his own chest.
Stede’s eyes are closed but he sees—feels—knows the room around him is receding. The walls are rushing away. The gentle rocking isn’t the Revenge riding the ocean swell, but their bed floating amongst waves. He can smell a sharp sting of salt and feel a biting wind on his cheeks.
Ed speaks, but the humming doesn’t stop. “Can you see it?”
He can.

“Don’t be such a spoilsport! I’m just going to saw myself free, and then I’ll do you, and we’ll come up with a distraction - some sort of fuckery, I’m rather good at them now - something to make them look the other way, and we’ll slip over to the side into a dinghy and row away.” It’s not a perfect plan, but Stede thinks it’s rather good given how little time he’s had to come up with it.
“That’s the stupidest fucking plan I’ve ever heard,” Ed says flatly. “You’re just gonna row away? Middle of the ocean, nothing to see for miles, and you think they’re not gonna notice you rowing away?”
Stede stops sawing at his bindings to snap, “Then you come up with a plan!”

“It’s hard to imagine him being a competent enough pirate to make a real enemy.” She pauses. “Unless you can make an enemy just by being that annoying.”
Ed furrows his brow. “Not supposed to speak ill of the dead, I thought.”

“Ah, so I see you’ve noticed these,” Stede said suddenly, bringing him back to the present. “Are these not the finest sugar nips you’ve ever laid eyes on?”
Ed blinked a few times. “Ah,” he said, “could you repeat that, mate?”
Stede waved the tongs he was holding in a little circle. “My sugar nips,” he repeated, as though it were obvious.
Stede invites Ed to his room for tea. Ed is eager to impress him and hide the fact that he fucking hates tea. We see the origins of the seven sugars.
