    Sally Jackson went missing when Percy Jackson was five years old. In foster care he found misfortune and monsters, and plenty of different schools to get kicked out of. Still, at twelve, he discovered his heritage and returned the Symbols of Power, traversed the Sea of Monsters and saved the only place he could call home. He believed his mother was out there, somewhere, just waiting to be rescued.

    But Sally didn't wait to be saved. She was in the very last place he thought to look.

    Bianca met her death in New Mexico, the skeletons turned out to be quite polite. Thalia got a fresh new sword from Hermes, though figuratively holding the god's hand is slightly uncomfortable.

    Zoe survives the fight on Mount Tam. Luke does not. But one is left worse than all others.

    Percy is left behind, quaking under the weight of the sky, listening to a strange voice trying to keep his spirits up.

    Percy has no idea why Kronos and Luke do the things that they do, but he has no other options left, really. So he does as he's told (most of the time) and kind of just thinks there's nobody else he can turn to for answers.

    Until he meets Annabeth and crouches down to help her carry the sky. Then things start to steer in the right direction, at long last.

The boys’ eyes, a bright gold that seemed to flow like a molten stream, were filled with concealed rage as he looked up Castellan from his position under the sky. Elsewise, his face was a blank mask of calm and contemplation. He was like a predator trapped behind the walls of a flimsy cage, watching its captors for the slightest moment of weakness.
