Buck hates Eddie immediately, but he isn’t sure if it’s the way he’s so horribly perfect or if it’s the way he nitpicks and constantly critiques everything Buck does in the gym. Damian sagged in relief. Jon was safe, then. Yes, he was still chained to the floor, but with any luck, Clark would notice his absence, or the local police had managed to get word to Damian’s father. Damian had done what he needed to do.
It was a shame he and Jon wouldn’t get to take on their fathers’ mantles together. Damian had been looking forward to that distant future.
Jon was still trying to say something, his eyes huge and oddly shimmery. Damian was puzzled until he realized it was because they were filling with tears.
“Don’t cry,” he said, managing to bring a weak hand up on his un-stabbed side, dragging the manacle with him, and brushing away the first drops as they spilled over. He wished he wasn’t wearing his gauntlets. He would have liked to touch Jon’s face again properly, one last time. “It’s okay. I bought you time.”
From the tone of Jon’s muffled sounds, he was trying to argue. Which was fair—Damian didn’t want to die any more than he thought Jon wanted him to die. But he didn’t have the energy to get worked up about it, not with the knife doing its job.
Faust was muttering in Latin behind Damian, clearly trying to reverse the spell and having no luck. Damian tuned him out. Even the knife didn’t hurt very much anymore.
He wasn’t sure if it was the energy draining from him or simply the shock of injury, but time seemed to be moving very slowly. Slowly enough for him to take in all the tiny, perfect details of Jon’s face: the mottled blues and violets of his irises. The shocking length of his dark lashes, now clumped together with tears. That one inky curl that always tumbled over his forehead. The little freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose and the tiny mole by his right eyebrow. Damian could have spent a lifetime looking at this face.
“Jon…” he said. His favorite name. He used to think it was prosaic, unimaginative. Now he knew it was beautiful.
Jon made another sound behind the gag. Damian was close enough—and finally moving slow enough—to see that it was made of the same substance as the manacle still around his own wrist. It wasn’t metal, like Damian had thought. It was words—tiny, inky words, crammed close enough to be solid.
Well, of course. This was a library, and they were magic chains. Of course they were made out of words.
Words. Lian had asked him what his truth was. She hadn’t been the real Lian, but this was his last chance to speak it.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I love you.”
Jon went very still. Damian fought back a cough. He could taste blood on his lips, and he suspected the knife had pierced a lung, but it didn’t particularly matter. The spell would kill him before the injury did. What mattered was that Jon knew.
“I love you,” he said again. “I suspect I loved you when we were children, but not in a way I understood. I understand it now.” He coughed, his chest aching as he inhaled. “I love you, and I wanted your touch every time, and I’m sorry I made you think you weren’t good enough for me. You’re the best person I know.” He tried to smile. His voice was getting weaker. “You’ll be...a great Superman. I’m...I’m only sorry I’ll...never get to be your Batman.”
Jon made a sound that Damian knew was his name. “It’s okay,” Damian tried to say again, but no sound came out. He sagged against the solid warmth of Jon, his eyelids drooping. He hoped someone remembered to feed his cat.
Through his nearly closed eyes, he could see the tiny words that made up their bindings start to glow golden as the letters rearranged themselves. The glow helped him to read them even as the edges of his vision went black: I’m sorry. I love you. His words.
