Impulse hated the old continent.
The air up here was colder than home; winter was setting in, and that was never fun. Sure, he’d only been coming up here for the past three summers and would always return to the Nether as the cold set in, but not this time. Any more time wasted might break his heart. The last sight he'd had of someone so dear had been scarlet and hazy, and that wasn't just because of the heat baking from the soul sand and lava oceans. It was a moment he'd regretted, plagued with guilt for ten years since, and as he'd gotten older, he'd found himself paralyzed in his grief. Not anymore. He wasn't going to cower and allow his guilt to drown him.
Last sight? No way. He'd do anything to see Tango again.{In which Impulse remembers, the mercenary guild sucks slightly less than the rest of society, but only slightly, and yeah, he was terrified, but he was never going to let that stop him from reaching out again.}

Summary
The rebellion failed. The Overworlders have officially taken over the Nether, pinning it under their dictatorship. Every Netherborn is either killed or enslaved. Some are lucky to die immediately from the bombs. Others suffer until they manage to find the sweet relief of death. There may be a few sympathisers, but they are silent, preferring to watch from the sidelines as the Netherborns suffer.
Tango is a young Netherborn, no more than eight years old, when he's captured by an Overworld nobleman and taken to his estate to be a "pet" for his son, Impulse. Fortunately, Impulse sees through his father's lies and treats Tango like a person. However, this does not stop the cruel twists of Fate.

Summary
The Burning Dark is a place where no soul has or will ever come out alive. The Dungeon has tried to keep "it" contained to no avail. The only thing that seems to settle "it" down is a warm body. The Dungeon told the mortals it is suicide to attempt to peruse about the Burning Dark.
The Master got too curious and acted against the Dungeon's warning.
Having been experiencing strange nightmares, paranoia, hallucinations, dizzy spells and frequent fails of consciousness, Ravager Ranger, Warden Wrangler TangoTek had had enough. He needed to know what was down there, what was tormenting him.
But what lies beneath the mines is an entity far out of the Dungeon's-- and fairly the Universe's-- control, a lethal abomination capable of things far beyond what the Master could have ever expected.

Tango is an astronaut who has crash-landed on a distant moon far from home. His ship is destroyed, his crew is gone, and he has no way out of here alive. All he has is gritty determination, a healthy amount of sarcasm, and a radio that can only reach one person who isn’t any more prepared to deal with this crisis than he is.
Impulse is an engineer who’s been getting into radio tech lately on the urging of his best friend and personal annoyance, Skizz. He can’t seem to get his radio to work, however—at least, not until it starts picking up a distress signal from the other side of the galaxy. Honestly, he probably shouldn’t be getting involved in this, considering he has no idea what he’s doing, but it sounds like this guy really needs help. And who is Impulse to turn down someone in need of help?

Leaning his shoulder into the backrest of the pilot seat, he takes the opportunity to assess Tango more. His friend’s shoulders are hunched, wound up tight, and his lips are thin as he speaks to the Guard. Now that Impulse has a better look, he confirms that Tango’s sickly hue isn’t just because of the holo screens — it’s also because Tango looks like he’s sick to his stomach.
He’s stressed. More stressed than Impulse has seen him in a long, long time. And as much as Impulse would love to blame bureaucracy, he knows better. Tango isn’t stressed about bureaucracy. He’s not even stressed about jumping into the Sidewinder.
It’s what comes after that’s the problem.

Tango asks Impulse to accompany him on a very important mission. Impulse agrees, but soon regrets it when he’s forced to navigate cultural differences, high-stakes politics, and his best friend’s worsening mental state — all while questioning reality in the worst ways possible.
