Summary
After a rocky start that led to a childhood friendship, an attack on the Pendragons forces Merlin to leave to avoid revealing his magic. They reunite years later and it goes badly, resulting in a serious injury to Merlin and causing them to separate again. Arthur is shortly after declared dead in a car accident, but Merlin discovers a cover-up. Uther breaks his own laws and uses sorcery and robotics to put Arthur in an android body. He decides Arthur isn't 'really Arthur' and tries to power him down. Arthur escapes and is captured as a 'rogue android'. Merlin finds him and helps him on a condition. The pair then work together to once again follow their destiny and save Albion.
Modern AU stemming from canon, everyone has been reincarnated. They'll remember eventually.

Summary
King Arthur sets out to keep his promise to the spirit of the Druid boy by repealing his father's ban on magic. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, for reasons including but not limited to the following:
(1) He can't change the law until he understands magic better, but no sorcerer is willing to explain magic to him until he changes the law;
(2) The sorcerers all have some strange obsession with Merlin, which is awakening all sorts of feelings in Arthur that he really doesn't fancy examining too closely;
(3) He is starting to feel like the butt of some Druid-population-wide inside joke involving the mysterious phenomenon called Emrys; and
(4) Oh yeah, Morgana is still trying to kill him.
Thus he embarks on a journey of discovery, diplomacy, accountability, and self-improvement, and maybe even falls in love along the way.

The world was strange. There was a time where almost every other person had some sort of magical ability. Whether it was making toys hover through the air or helping bathwater to stay warm longer. But some had abilities that scared those without. Their vibrant colored hair showed the extent of their powers. While most people would have a few streaks here and there, or color that was only at their nape, it was common knowledge that they held some innate skill with magic. There were many who didn’t know what their ability was, but they held a colored streak that would fade as they grew older. It tended to manifest in many in their adolescence; their magical abilities. If they studied to try to figure out what their ability was, if they didn’t know, then their hair would brighten the closer they got to figuring it out. Once their color settled, their eyes would glow a brilliant gold color when they applied their magic. It was breathtaking to behold.
