Ghosts have always haunted Arthur Pendragon, even before she was trained in the art of war.
As her father raved and raged about the evils of magic, she saw the ghosts of those her father killed in the corners of her eyes. She held her tongue in those situations, obviously, because anyone with the clairvoyant ability to see the dead was also magical, and she didn’t believe she was spared from her father’s fury. Despite being his only heir since her mother died, Arthur knew she wasn’t immune.

Either you would be in the corner of the downtrodden sorcerers whose lives are lived on the fringes of society or you would be adamant that magic could not be allowed because of your loyalty to me, but what I did not expect was for you to go through a lifetime of emotions and look as if you were being asked to sacrifice your best friend in the world.” Arthur sighed and looked away.
Merlin cringed. Arthur had no idea, and he never would.
Arthur slowly turned his face back toward Merlin and it looked shattered. “But you aren’t really my lackey, are you? You never have been. You were going to let me go in there and tell them no,” Arthur said, his voice visibly trembling as he covered Merlin’s hand with his. “You were going to sacrifice the part of you that makes you who you are,” hurt in his voice as he lifted his other hand and cupped the side of Merlin’s face. “Why would you do that, Merlin? Why? I don’t understand.”
“Because Mordred is going to kill you, Arthur,” Merlin responded, his face no doubt pale.

Morgana can't help but gloat about his current state, but he can't help but watch as merlin slowly rises up behind her. A completely Unfamiliar and cold look on his face as he holds excalibur and moves towards her. Arthur has no idea if he can actually use the thing, but the look on his face is terrifying, his eyes are cold and dark as he stabs morgana without hesitation.
Arthur let's out a pained noise, because this woman was once his beloved sister, where had everything gone wrong? He sees merlins eyes go from dark and stormy to sad and mournful as he whispered goodbye to her.
Arthur thought he'd feel at least some joy at finally bringing peace to the land, but he only feels tired and crestfallen that it had to come to this.
