Mono perked up, picking up his pace, worried. Did she mean eggnog? Odd red color aside, that stuff had alcohol, and he didn't want Six to develop worse habits than her already violent tendencies, given the constant dangers they still struggled against. “Is that what God told you?” Gooseberry mocked, her breath warm against the mask’s eye slits. “That you’re too holy for a touch like mine? That you’re a saint because you turn your nose up at the soup? You’re just a starving girl in a pretty costume.”
She leaned in further, her weight pinning Liliya. The rough fabric of Gooseberry’s dress grated against Liliya’s suit. Every point of contact felt like a brand. Liliya’s breath came in shallow, jagged hitches. She wanted to spit in that manic face, to tear at the curls, to scream until the stained glass shattered—but her body remained a traitorous, limp thing. A small, shameful part of her was leaning into the palm.
“Tell me,” Gooseberry murmured, her thumb dragging down to Liliya’s throat, hovering right over the pulse point that was thrumming a frantic, uneven rhythm. “When you close your eyes at night... is it Father you see? Or is it Mother?”
Liliya has been having dreams of Gooseberry that have been too pleasant, and decides she must be a sinful force.
