Summary
Only when Ghost was blessedly shielded by shadows did he dare turn around, knife in hand, to greet the beast.
His breath caught unwillingly in his throat.
Large.
Ghost had always known that the Na’vi were big. It was perhaps the greatest point of intrigue for their species to those who knew little more than side-by-side comparisons. The Na’vi were massive in theory…but it was an entirely different topic to tackle when one was staring directly at where Ghost lay in hiding.
. . .
Ghost came to Pandora to die amongst unseen stars. He didn't care for his Avatar body - the body Tommy was meant to pilot before he died - he just wanted rest.
Unfortunately, after his transport crashes on the surface of Pandora leaving him stranded, he's forced into wars he swore off when he left active combat. The Na'vi are brutal, but they are not unkind as they pick up the broken pieces of him and remind Ghost...His heart is warm so long as it is beating.

Summary
“So why…why haven’t you consumed me?”
“You intrigued me,” it cooed directly into his ear.
No.
“Your fierce will to survive…”
No, that wasn’t right.
“To live.”
No, that was wrong…
Something in him was wrong.
“Stop it!” Simon screamed at last, desperate as he pushed himself back into Eden’s tree — but there was nowhere to go.
It was in his head.
In his body.
…In his mind.
His heart felt like it was going to explode as he held it in pain.
He thinks he’s begging. He has to be. He can feel his lips moving, but his ears are muted to the sound of his babbling. All he is — all that he can hear — is the voice of God in his ear.
“I could make you a god,” it continues, either unaware or uncaring of his distress as he watched, horrified, as tendrils of prismatic light drifted from its swirling iris. Nebulas gutted themselves before him and bled into his world so that they could curl around him.
. . .
Simon wakes after what should have been the end.

Summary
The scars themselves ranged from long incisions that stretched down his chest and right down his belly like the sharp slice of gutted livestock.
Robert had an ‘X’ crossed over his heart like someone had taken a knife to it and unfolded the skin out like the petals of a flower to drive their fingers in between the gaps of his ribcage.
He was thinner than Sonar had initially guessed from looking at the way his uniform hung from his body. Rail thin and gangly in all the wrong places. He had muscle, of course, more than Sonar had expected to find, but no part of him looked healthy.
…He looked young.
“This isn’t a show, by the way,” the dispatcher ground out as he finally turned his head back to where Sonar was slack-jawed staring. “Didn’t your mother teach you not to stare?”
. . .
Months pass, and Sonar learns to map out the soft parts of Robert...How long will he have, though, before the consequences of Robert’s secrecy catch up to him?
Exhausted and with nowhere else to turn, will his walls finally come crumbling down?

Summary
Gore wasn’t thinking. Fight or flight had kicked in, and when his body couldn’t pull from the adrenaline he’d already lost from the river run earlier, it ate away at whatever strength he had left instead. He didn’t think. He simply acted. Instinct, pure, primal, and protective, filled his mind as he reached up and raked his nails across his forearm. Skin ripped and folded beneath his ragged nails as he dug shallow grooves into the meat of his arm. Blood immediately rose to meet him, pebbling against his skin from the cold before dripping down his arm and staining the snow beneath him.
That should get their attention.
Effie’s wound was an old, weeping thing that bled beneath the strain of moving around. She’d been using just enough magic to keep it from seeping into the bedding around them.
Gore though? Gore’s arm bled openly and freely. A fresh, oozing wound.
True to their nature, the wolves turned their attention to him.
. . .
Gore and Ipigenia, still recovering from the events of Dawnstar, find brief refuge in the wilds outside of Windhelm, but their safety is skin-deep to all that haunts the night.

Summary
Shadow woke.
Because of course he did.
Joy.
He woke up gagging on water and vomiting up onto the shoreline he’d been unceremoniously deposited onto. A mercy, all things considered, that the water would so gently lay him ashore when it’d so mercilessly bashed him against every rock imaginable beforehand. He could have cried in relief, and if a few salty streaks ran down his cheek despite himself then…then there wasn’t a soul around to tell of his weakness.
Everything still hurt.
Worse, actually, than it did before.
If it were possible.
. . .
Shadow would like to rest.
Knuckles will not let him.

Summary
The Absolute’s infection should’ve stripped him of all higher functions beyond that of his enthrallment. No manner of injury or exhaustion should keep him from attacking her. Yet, here he was, touching his face with a confused look that seemed all too human for Uzi’s taste. Vampires especially craved the look of what they once were, even if they no longer saw humans as anything more than cattle to feed on.
“Can you…can you see me?” Uzi asked tentatively, still breathing hard from the fight.
“I can see you…?” the vampire responded in loose lucidity.
“Holy shit it talks,” Uzi deadpanned incredulously. “You have to be fucking kidding me.”
“Sorry,” he slurred, his eyes closing again sleepily, “You’re bleeding.”
Holy shit, again.
. . .
Uzi had been doing well enough on her own for years now. She'd learned through heartache and betrayal that nothing good had come from her vulnerability. She didn’t need anyone, but when she comes crashing home with a vampire in tow, Uzi is forced to come to terms with the fact that sometimes…she needs help too.
Besides, if he were easy to kill, she’d have done it already, but something in him refuses to die, and for that they are alike.

Summary
He couldn’t be that.
He wasn’t soft and remorseful — hell — he wasn’t even a good man on his better days. He was a shambling, unsightly thing with the way his port wine stain stretched across his nose and cheeks like an answer someone hadn’t been able to erase.
But he wanted it, a traitorous voice whined from the dark recesses of his mind. God, did he want it. That wicked, horrible thing in his chest begged to be heard, but it spat nothing but half-baked fantasies. It reminded him softly of the child he used to be — with a heart a little too big — who wanted the boys and their flowers, the chocolates, the Hallmark movies, the consistency of a partner, and their steadfast love.
“I want him,” Soap had said with his eyes turned toward heaven.
Ghost longed in a way that made that terrible creature in his chest keen for attention.
“I just don’t know if he wants me too.”
Not like how I want him.
. . .
Out on a mission after Makarov’s death, Ghost is made to define the domestic life he’s since built with Soap, and just what they both want from each other this Valentine’s Day.

Summary
“You would really wish for me to marry again?” he asked in a terribly small voice. He would only have asked her this, for she too wore a wedding dress with the expectation of every awful thing that came with it. He wouldn’t have dared to utter such insecurities at the feet of the King, but here he allowed himself to feel like a child begging not to be sent away.
She did not answer for a long while, and when she did it was with a great sigh of sorrow.
“Yes, my sweet thing.”
Simon’s chest felt tight at her voice, but still, he continued, “I am damaged,” he told her like that would be his God-given sanctuary. “If you wish for a virgin then I’d suggest a church, but I am a whore,” he spat the word with all the vile vitriol that’d been thrown at his feet over his lifetime, “and you will have nothing from my body. I’ve made it so that no man can ever fucking touch me, your bastard son included.”
. . .
Ghost has been wed to the Prince of the West after his nation is conquered. They had wanted King Roba, Ghost's late husband, to answer for crimes across the sea. Instead, they are left with the nation's icy Black Queen in his stead. The only way to survive is an alliance neither wanted.

Summary
Wolfwood supposed it was fitting in a cosmic sense that the highest of men had fallen back to the earth on their waxen wings. Perhaps that was why Vash could no longer take to the skies, despite the titanic wings that fluttered behind them. Even from afar, Wolfwood could see the ugliness that Vash felt within them. They were crooked and wrong — stunted like a scarred chest bound too tight. Do that long enough and you damn near train your body to accept failing lungs as a new standard of living.
What a way to live.
Thinking you’re only ever as much as your clipped wings and harsh bindings.
Wolfwood marveled at the fact. What a shitty way to die in half as many steps.
When he next looked down at Vash, he found impossibly baby-blue eyes staring back at him. There was a pleading look about it all as Vash weakly grabbed Wolfwood's hands. Vash was shaking hard enough that he could hear the man’s teeth chatter painfully with the effort it took to simply be present.
“Please,” Vash finally outright begged with a hoarse sob.
. . .
With Vash injured after the fight with Livio, it's up to Wolfwood to pick up all the broken pieces left behind.

Summary
“Is — Is Ghost running from me?” Soap asked once the glow of Price’s cigar drowned out the flickering fluorescent lamp lights above them.
Price took a long drag before replying, “probably.”
That stung, but Soap appreciated the honesty as he folded his arms across the rusted metal of the piers fencing. He’d suspected as much — no — he knew as much to be true. Ghost was flighty as a feral cat, and no amount of food left out would bring the man home until he felt safe again. It pained him to recognize that he didn’t feel safe with Soap, not anymore. Maybe he never had in the first place, and that brief relinquishment of control between them was a fluke, if not something conjured up by Soap’s own subconscious to chase after a fleeting hope.
Soap wanted to love Ghost in whatever capacity the other would let him, but he could only get so far when he was stonewalled every step of the way.
. . .
After the rubble clears from their night in the cabin, Soap is left with all the broken pieces that Ghost fled without. With bloodied hands, he learns the value of patience as they fight to define themselves.

Summary
The problem was that the forest had fallen eerily silent just as he watched a tree trunk move.
All too late, he realized that it was not a tree, but a spindly leg that stretched high into the canopy. It was built of sinuous muscle that flexed with each heavy step. It shook the very earth as he looked high above the trees - and wished that he hadn’t.
He couldn’t even begin to describe what he was looking at. Its bones constantly popped in and out of place, as though the towering creature that kissed the clouds above hadn’t yet decided on the skin it settled itself within. It had a long, hairless snout with lips that peeled all the way back to reveal horselike teeth. Its lower jaw hung perpetually open, and snapped to and fro with each thunderous step it took. Black eyes the color of a starless sky looked out upon the encampment of arms dealers, and Soap could have prayed right then and there were he not so paralyzed in his seat.
. . .
Simon Riley died.
What crawled its way from his grave was less than human as it donned a man's skin in masquerading attire.

Summary
His pace quickened when he first saw it - an abandoned tactical vest. It stood out against the snowy expanse like a bloodied nose - something that demanded attention. It called out to him as though this single article of clothing could tell him everything that had gone wrong so, so quickly.
Except it wasn’t just a vest.
He knelt down beside a winter coat that had a sizable tear in the back from where blood had seeped into the innermost fur lining.
An undershirt was next. Two, actually, as he recalled Price’s stubborn insistence that they had to bundle up tight as mummies in order to survive. Layers were key.
So why had Soap taken his off?
Ghost felt trepidation well in the pit of his stomach as he collected article after article of abandoned clothing. Some were significantly more brutalized than others. He might have even missed the lost scarf due to it having snagged itself on a tree branch.
Belt, pants, socks…
. . .
If you ever want to know how it feels to be saved,
Just let someone save you.
Let someone rescue the smile drowning inside you,
It's not too late, I swear.Series

Summary
Shaking, Ghost lifted both hands and gestured downwards to sign the most simplistic form of begging he’d ever willingly given.
“Stay?”
Soap regarded him carefully, and Ghost knew that he was read like an open book now. With no mask to hide behind his face was marred by whatever fleeting emotion passed through his head and heart in tandem. He could hide nothing like this, and it was terrifying. He slept soundly with his mask for this very reason, and Soap just watched all the while.
He was deciding if it was worth it.
The olive branch held across the ravine that divided their lives- the opening he’d been asked to give. A promise to try.
“Can I hold you?” was a hushed challenge to test the newfound boundaries between them as Soap’s hand hovered near the door.
. . .
The aftermath and recovery of torture as Soap fished out one [1] resident stupid from the river like a half-drowned cat.
Ghost is a broken man. Soap might bloody his hands on the jagged pieces, but he puts Simon back together again at the end of the day.Series

Summary
Leo was patient, at least. His hand was open and lax as Casey slowly squeezed around it, careful not to be as bruising as he had been before. It was difficult to be gentle, and Casey seldom ever understood how exactly to be soft with his touch. Still, he brought Leo’s hand close to his chest like a stolen trophy and nearly dragged his friend halfway across the mattress alongside the motion. Leo was doing that thing where he rubbed small circles into Casey’s palm as though the contact would drag the boy back into his body. This contact was fine so long as it was small, and forever on Casey’s terms. It was fine because it was Leo’s hand and it was just the one.
Only ever the one.
. . .
Casey and Co. spend the day exploring a local festival in the Hidden City where Casey has funnel cakes for the first time, and is coaxed into putting his first real artistic mark into the world with a collective mural. Breathless and utterly elated with this brief moment of freedom, he forgets himself until the crackle of fireworks overhead brings him right back to where he started.
Except he has family at his side to bring him back from the edge.Series

Summary
The man before Casey had to have been a Yokai. He stood a head above the boy with ruddy pink skin and long hair pulled up into a bun. Much like Casey, the Yokai was sporting sweatpants with a band of elastic that looked to have been held together by an assortment of safety pins, and no small amount of prayers. A thin layer of sporadic tufts of fur speckled the stranger’s body. His calloused hands were currently clutching his flat, albeit bloody nose with a pained hiss at the blow he’d taken.
He was muttering something that Casey hadn’t quite caught. He was still floating between worlds with the acrid smell of something burning filling all of his senses.
“You hit me,” the man sounded more impressed than he did offended as he swept furiously at the blood steadily dribbling onto the ground in a splattered puddle.
“Who?” Casey rasped, entirely out of his head but still present enough to know when he wasn’t safe. He couldn’t be doing this in front of strangers.
“My name is Baron Draxum. You must be the–”
Casey went to swing at him again.

Summary
“You will be silent,” The Croc replied, seemingly unfazed by the downright feral cat clawing at its arm.
“I would rather-” Casey’s breath caught abruptly in his throat with a choke at the neon mist that erupted from the scaly protrusions all along the Croc’s arms. It caught Casey off-guard enough that he took in a deep enough gasp that his lungs briefly seemed to fill with water. He had been drowned before, and subsequently pulled from the rivers of New York like a drenched cat that his senseis had looked down upon in pity.
“Silence,” the Croc cooed with some cruel sense of satisfaction for the way Casey’s struggles died into a feeble whine of confusion.
He was deposited upon the ground with no sense of worth as he struggled in vain to find purchase in the earth. It felt as though he were wading through some thick haze with no direction as to what was up and down.
Drugged. He had been drugged.
. . .
When the building came down around them, Casey didn't think before he acted- he just did. Now, trapped beneath the ruinous tower, Casey found shadows at his heels like wolves. They nipped, bit, and tore at his present and past in the same breath.
It had been so long...

Bending down beside the crumpled form, Techno reached out to lift a wing that shielded the boy’s face for further inspection. A better hero–Phil–wouldn’t have needed the inspection. Techno knew the man would have noted the startling similarities, and ended his suspicions right where they began. He would have scooped the little thing up like a chick, and fussed like the brooding hens Techno used to raise.
True to his initial suspicions, the boy held the picturesque framework of Phil’s face. While his golden hair was matted with a rats’ nest and his face smeared with blood, Techno could still wipe at it enough to find a mole. He recognized the mole as one plastered upon Phil’s Instagram reels.

Please, Prime, he needed to move. He had to move!
“What’re you doing out?”
Too late.
“Run.” A voice, silken as shadows, whispered in his ear, as she so often did when an opening came. He had ignored her beckoning so many times, fearful of the punishment he’d receive should he fail, but punishment would be coming if he didn’t move his damned legs. So for once, Ranboo obeyed her call, and he ran.

However, freedom isn’t all he bargained for as he’s thrown into a game of kings he never asked to be a part of.)

Summary
He lost count of how many times he dialed his mom’s number, filling her inbox with what began as somewhat put-together pleas to call him, though they soon dissolved into sobbing and outright begging her to come home. He tried his dad with the same failing results until he had exhausted every saved number on file with a weakened cry to be the only greeting he received from outside. Everything burnt. Like fire licking at his skin and ice through his veins as he backed himself into a corner by the cabinets and wallowed. Black, angry veins shot through what little of his arms were still exposed. He felt his cheeks grow tacky from the blood that ran down his eyes and bubbling brooks dripped from his nose. Tommy was afraid. He drifted off like that–afraid.

And he had no choice in the world that came after.
