Summary
After the death of his mother, Martin has no reason to keep himself bound to the unwelcome city he's lived in his whole life. Seeking a change, he moves to a small town in the heart of the English countryside - one tied inexplicably and centuries-deep to the Courts of Fair Folk that reside in the nearby forest.
It's by chance that he finds himself lost, after dark, wandering through the woodland in search of something that wears his friend's face. It's by chance that the fae he meets does not intend to devour him. It's by chance — really, it is — that his life is now entangled with the roots and the vines that lace through this town like cabling, as he delves into the past in search of the heart of the fae Courts, and truly, if there's a way to bring anyone back from the creatures that may have snatched them from the world a hundred years before.

It wasn’t Gem at the door, though. It was a customer—a frantic-looking man around his age, with dark skin and woolly hair—bursting through the door. The fluffy, blue jumper he wore told Mumbo the morning chill hadn’t eased off yet. He was panting heavily, having clearly just been running, but his eyes locked onto Mumbo’s with a startling intensity.
“Hey, plant guy. What kind of flowers would you get for a dog’s birthday party?”
Mumbo is a florist, and BigB is a customer who keeps coming back to buy flowers. It's been four days now. He's starting to get concerned.
