Summary
He can’t do it. He just can’t do it.
No matter how damaged Brian is (and it borders irreparable), Dexter can’t bring himself to kill his brother. He can’t bring himself to kill the only person who sees him as he is—the same person who left beautiful, bloodless bodies out on display just for him. They’re connected in a way beyond blood and death, they’re entwined all the way back in the days of the Before. Brian predates the Need and the Dark Passenger, even if Dexter can’t remember it. Besides, didn’t his father always tell him that family is important?
And it isn’t Brian’s fault that he’s outside the Code.
Although he hates to think negatively of Harry in any way, he has to admit that Dad abandoned his brother, leaving him to develop his modus operandi and a particular flexibility for victims, as long as they fit his aesthetic requirements. But all of that is something he can change, Dexter knows that. His father taught him the Code, gave him something to cleave to when the Need built up. Now, he’s going to do the same for his brother. He’ll just need to keep a bit of a closer eye on Brian than Harry did—letting him get away could result in an innocent’s death, after all.

Lance hurriedly nods, letting Shiro release his hands to wrap him up in a warm hug.
“Oh,” Shiro whispers, in a way that makes Lance think that he’s not supposed to hear it. “You’re so soft.”
(As Lance's family falls apart under his parent's continual fighting, he finds solace in the strange friendship he builds with the school nurse and his son, but as things continue to worsen at home, the more Lance becomes entangled in Shiro's webs of secrets.
