She grips the hem of her uniform tighter. It’s the same suffocating feeling she had back then when scientists murmured in clipped voices, reviewing results as if she wasn’t even there. As if she were just an experiment.
Her heart hammers against her ribs. She isn’t supposed to remember that. Isn’t supposed to compare this to the past. Because this is different, isn’t it?

And Bond barks at her papa. She does not move from her hiding spot – if she moves, she get caught and that’s bad. So she only listens to Bond forcing Loid out of her room, as Loid tries to figure out why the family dog is so hostile to him.
It is only when Loid has been forced out, and Bond clamps his teeth around the ribbon that Anya tied around the handle to pull it shut, does she open the cupboard door, wrap her arms around her dog, and cry.
Anya thinks – she’s playing sardines now, isn’t she? She thought she was playing Hide and Seek – if she gets caught, it’s all over.
But she told Becky and Damian, and…the world didn’t end. She’s only a little less scared by the prospect of being found. Instead, she has two people wriggling into her hiding spot, quietly bickering as Anya hides away.
Her terms. No one else’s. So it’s understandable to him how she felt about her father finding out before she had the courage to tell him – and he’s quiet as he talks her through the panic, until her breathing stops resembling little gasps and starts to more closely resemble actual breathing. He hears footsteps, and he’s ready to snap at whoever it is, when he sees Blackbell approach, ignoring him entirely and kneeling in front of Anya.
Loid Forger is overprotective of his daughter? Then he’s about to meet the wrath of both a Desmond and a Blackbell combined.
“If you’re sure, Miss Forger,” Hender says, turning to leave. “Godspeed, Miss Forger,” is the thought, unaware that Anya heard it. She only nods, before turning to Damian and Loid.
Damian is still sitting on the couch, silently glaring at her father, his gaze not moving. “Say the word, and I’ll get rid of him.” Damian thinks and Anya only pats his shoulder in a “Don’t worry about it,” sort of way. She also doesn’t really want to see what a fistfight between a teenage boy and a spy would look like.
Becky grins, and elbows Damian, who – curiously – stammers and turns red. “Looks like you got the father’s blessing Damian,” she teases and Damian sputters.
“It hardly counts!” he protests. Loid can’t help but chuckle, thankful for the friends that Anya has found.
Opposed to hide and seek, there’s really only one way to end a game of sardines: All the seekers bundled with the hider, giggling until they spill from the hiding spot.
For Anya, she is playing sardines, not hide and seek. She can’t face everything – she could never.
But one day – she will brush the snow off Subject 007, and gently guide it up the radio tower, so that they can watch the first sunrise together.
