In normal circumstances, L would assume his current belief that he is living out some sort of time loop of his own death is merely a bout of insanity that he should sleep or eat or work off. Again, if these were normal circumstances, not preceded by the proof of Shinigami and a notebook that kills people.
(L lives the day of his death over and over again and attempts to escape the loop.)

There’s something missing from Light Yagami’s skull. There’s something missing and he can’t put his finger on what it is. Memories seem vague, motives are aimless, people he’s met had occurred under blurry circumstances, and something is simply missing entirely. In its place is something which obstructs his sleep and mocks the missingness of his brain. He’ll find what had left. He just has to look hard enough.
TL;DR: The handcuffs/Yotsuba arc but Light has nightmares. Also I harp on the concept of memories a lot. Plus there’s some experimental symbolism and repetition. This is incredibly plot compliant and strictly follows the manga timeline.

Matsuda thought absentmindedly, gaze drifting from the notebook ever so slightly. When he read the notebook even further, he was… a little creeped out? On how detailed it is. You need a name and a face, in forty seconds or they die of a heart attack? Why in the world is the default heart attacks anyway?
His gaze went back to the notebook, as he picked it up and opened it again, like if anything different was going to appear from the other ten times he opened it. When he thought about even more, it sounded ridiculous. No man would be killed with a flick of a pen. That’s not how kills work, there has to be effort after all. The hardest part about killing humans is killing humans. However now, this notebook is all up in front and saying:
“Now even murder can be lazy! Isn’t that the epitome of humanity?“

For someone so obsessed with logic, L certainly didn’t mess around when it came to mind games – especially the kind that left Light wondering if she just imagined the way the other woman’s eyes lingered just a moment too long on her mouth when they talked.
It was nights just like these that specific train of thought tended to wander a bit more than Light would have liked – and Ryuzaki’s constant presence was of little assistance.
The raven-haired woman’s weight felt heavy next to Light’s, and she was rapidly typing away at her keyboard, ever the insomniac. Light stole a glance up at the woman next to her – those bug-like eyes and the sweeping black hair that almost always sought to cover them framed perfectly by the screen and its luminescent glow.

“Sorry,” Light at least had the decency to say that. He thought it might've been the first time he actually said sorry to L and meant it. Of course, Light had apologized before, for mundane things— but it never felt real.
The ashamed feeling in his chest was almost too much. “Sorry,” he repeated. “I… sorry. I'm gross.”
“Hm. I don't think you're gross.” L simply replied, as though he wasn't bothered by Light's whining in the slightest. Why wouldn't he be? Light was revolting, and he was already tainting him. “I like when Light-kun is honest.”

That dark stare, blank like the cloudy night sky covering the wonderful moon. “You seem lonely, have you ever thought about kids, Light?” L asked, finger on his lip, eyes never wavering from Light’s face. The black-haired man fixed himself on his cushioned chair.
“L we are both men, besides would we even care for it?” Light took a sip of the sugarless camomile tea, the cup decorated in apples and greenery of many kinds, avoiding contact with those fish eyes. “ And certainly we can't adopt we would have to fill out documents and surely it would be too much compromise for our identities and location”
“That's true..” The sound of sipping made Light steal a few glances forward, L was drinking the hot cocoa so obnoxiously loud, for a moment it made Light's ears sincerely agonize. “However I was not speaking about adoption, you don't seem the type of guy who would accept that Light, I always imagined you as a bloodline person” L then put down the clear white mug.
What's your plan L? You got everything you wanted from me. What path are you deciding to take? “I don't get it”
