She’s roamed closer now to the iron bars, nearly nose to nose with Zuko. He’s close enough to see the smattering of red on her cheek from crying.
It reminds him of when she was a toddler. A little girl with ruddy red cheeks and shiny gold eyes sniffling as Zuko frantically tried to placate her awful tears.
Is he allowed the bitter lump of tears in his throat? He sees how far from grace she’s fallen and can’t help but mourn.
“I’ll be back tomorrow.”

Summary
When Azula challenged Zuko to an Agni Kai on the day of Sozin’s Comet, she set in motion a succession by right of challenge. The Agni Kai left Azula defeated, and Zuko claimed his ascendency.
With Zuko on the mend, the Fire Nation prepares for his formal coronation.
But a faction of careful observers approach with a problem: before Azula was defeated, she left Zuko mortally wounded, unable to complete the Agni Kai. The bending master who actually defeated Azula, the true Fire Lord by right of challenge…was Katara of the Southern Water Tribe.

On a trip into town, he runs into a man with a story painfully similar to Zuko's who had been able to find a happy life in the earth Kingdom, leaving the ideals of the Fire Nation behind. He is able to help Zuko settle into his new life as well.

Letting out a slow breath, the banished prince lowered his gaze to the floor again and tried to focus on sharpening his swords. After dinner, Katara had thought that it would be a good idea to practice her waterbending under the moonlight. No problem there, Zuko himself loved to practice his firebending in the sunlight. The issue was that she decided to practice right next to him.

Zuko gets hurt and thinks he deserves it as punishment. Sokka's there to tell him otherwise.

This fic is the prequel to "Zuko's Choice." Beware: spoilers below.
Description: This fic reimagines ATLA’s “The Boiling Rock” (S3E15), following Sokka and Zuko’s journey to the Fire Nation’s highest security prison to rescue Chief Hakoda. While the overall plot mirrors the episode - including the discovery of Suki’s imprisonment and the group’s eventual escape - this version explores a much darker and more realistic interpretation of events. Zuko’s capture leads to an experience far more harrowing than what was shown in canon, leaving lasting scars that shape the story’s emotional core and set the stage for its sequel, Zuko’s Choice.
Opinion: This. Fic. Is. Really. Really. Intense. Do not underestimate it. This story reimagines the episode in a far more realistic light, never shying away from the horrors too often committed during wartime. It’s for this reason that I have an appreciation for the fic - it portrays sexual assault exactly as it is in the real world: there’s no fade-to-black, no turning away from the reality of it simply because it’s uncomfortable. It raises awareness for something so horrid, yet this makes for an extremely intense and, at times, triggering read. The conversation which follows the act really drives home the point that even in war, there are some lines that should never be crossed. I appreciate this fic for what it is, but it is undoubtedly a difficult read - and it’s clearly intended to be.
Disclaimer: It goes without saying that this fic has the potential to be not only deeply uncomfortable but also actively triggering for some readers, so please be warned - this fic isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay.
