AU: In all major corporate law firms in the U.S., associates’ employment contracts require consent to receipt of corporal punishment from the partners who oversee their work. Associates who refuse corporal punishment are subject to immediate termination. This is legal and socially accepted within the AU.
Different from my other series because at the time Harvey hires Mike, he does not consciously recognize the firm’s disciplinary policy as inherently unethical and does not intend to exempt his own associate from corporal punishment. He’s not sadistic, but he has been taught that this is how all law firms work and hadn’t expected that punishing his associate for screwing up would feel like anything more than a distasteful inconvenience (which is how he has historically felt about having to interact with associates at all).
