In 1793, Jacques-Louis Davis put oil to canvas and painted The Death of Marat, a now famous depiction of the assassination of the French revolutionary leader by the painting's namesake. There is a copy on display at the Louvre. I feel both like the man in that painting and also the observer at the Louvre looking at the this work of art. Me and that painting (this fic), yeah, we're fucking making eye contact right now.

Dabi has been sent on another recruiting mission by Shigaraki, and he is not a happy camper. Not only is it almost Halloween, which is dredging up some painful memories he’d rather leave behind him, but he’s also going to be bombarded by news of his hypocrite of a father as he speaks to the nation on the first of the coming month, and thoughts of a different hero concerning their convoluted and most definitely doomed relationship aren’t helping either.
Luckily, he may soon find the time to take a step back and see things from a new, and much shorter, perspective.

Jax knew everyone in the circus hated him. And good riddance!
He’s a jerk. And he might as well be. Because what’s the point? What’s the point in niceties and fake smiles? People like to smile and act like they’re all friends, but the second things turn messy, the second they see who you really are, you learn that the word “friend” actually has no weight at all.
Everyone is nice and friendly and fake. And Jax doesn’t see the point in pretending. He never has.
...except he still pretends. Just in a different way now. He pretends he has control. Pretends that his life isn't dictated by an unstable AI.
It's not that hard, really, it's not like he had much control before the circus. Hell, back when he had been a human, he wasn't even allowed to be a man.
OR: Jax copes by lying to himself and pushing everyone away, by being an instigator, and it usually works... but recent events are reminding him just how little control he actually has.
