His eyes, those almost beautiful eyes. Irises the color of the ocean seemed to glow and sparkle with the shine that only Mako could give them. Cloud had sometimes wondered if his own eyes were that color, or if Sephiroth's were the only ones like them. They could draw you in and make you think things were all right.
Or they could make you forget the conversation you were having with him. -

“Finished?” She pushed at his shoulder. “Finished? Oh, we’re nowhere close to finished. Jenova might be dealt with but Shinra are still here.” She leant closer. “Still churning out SOLDIERs. Still running Mako plants.” She winced. “Hojo’s still allowed to do his freaky experiments.”
Aeris finds Sephiroth as her companions complete their mission.

He floated in endless white, only dimly aware of the passage of time and never able to truly gauge just how long it had been since his arrival. It didn't matter; he'd learnt too much to be concerned with such mundane trifles. He'd almost learnt all he needed to fulfill Mother's objectives and more besides. If he remained here long enough he would know everything. For now the Lifestream still was carefully guarding certain secrets; secrets he needed to know.
A distant resonance caught his attention. He'd felt an increasing number of them over his time here; some distant, barely discernible against the babble of voices that surrounded him. Others were stronger, coherent sensations that he felt gradually drawing closer. One in particular was more vivid than the others; it had once been two resonances but the second had abruptly vanished while the other had grown increasingly strong. He'd observed it curiously, not quite understanding what it was or what it meant.
Sephiroth gains a new form to return to the surface of the Planet and to seek out the Black Materia

Liver spots mottled Tifa’s shaking hands. “Humanity did not care enough to look and not even the Planet knew of the approaching disaster until it was too late.” Aeris spoke with the warmth and softness of memory.

Pain seemed to be all Cloud knew from the moment he threw Sephiroth into the mako pool. If only he could have stayed awake in the aftermath. If only Hojo had not captured him. If only- Cloud clenched his teeth as his head bent back on the operating table and he grunted with pain. Press for Emergency Ventilation. The sign was upside down and familiar, but it was all he had in these moments, his sole distraction. Press for Emergency Ventilation. His arms strained against the restraints as Hojo cut deeper, or pulled or- The sensations were not delineated; it was simply pain.
Cloud dies at Hojo's hands after his capture at Nibelheim. Then he was left with the question: now what?

Summary
Vincent sat slumped under the starlight on top of the water-tower. It was freezing at night in the unremarkable mountain settlement of Nibelheim. Unremarkable in the present maybe; almost forgotten now were the town's prior claims to fame. Not only was the town once the home and exclusive domain of the Shinra family, but the treacherous slopes of the nearby Mount Nibel still played host to the very first Mako reactor. Time had moved on however; now there were Mako reactors everywhere and the family was busily beginning the construction of their mega-city across the sea. The little town that they once ruled was now little more than the last sign of civilisation for those who insisted on trailing through the treacherous mountains towards the distant land of Wutai.
The most boring assignment in the world had an upside when Vincent met Lucrecia. Until she rejected him.
