But they’re in Nibelheim and his helmet is off so he can breathe and Sephiroth was knelt on the ground near him, about to say farewell as they split off, and Cloud just. Does it.
Cloud Strife, infantryman of the 17th division of Shinra, failed SOLDIER applicant, and country-hick olden raised dumbass, leans over to kiss Sephiroth’s cheek as they agree to part ways.

The man didn't respond, but his eyes pointedly traveled down from his face, examining the rest of him. Or as much as was visible, while sitting down. The scrutiny made him shift uncomfortably.
“Name’s Zack," he offered a self-assured smile, eyes looking straight into his own again. "I’m hopin’ it will be somethin’ to remember.”

Red padded out into a clearing off the jungled path where a toppled log laid sideways in the two-foot tall grass and the afternoon’s fading sunlight bathed the field in warm and brilliant orange. He pawed at a cluster of weeds until only dirt remained, creating a firepit to sit around for the conversation Aerith suggested earlier.
Tifa smiled, thin but pleased, and stepped out to give Red a scratch behind his ears. “Thank you, Nanaki.”
Aerith bounded out into the grass, then plopped herself unceremoniously on the log. “This is perfect. We can make it a vigil—talk about the old Nibelheim.”
“I’ll get the firewood,” Cloud blurted out.
Surprised, they both turned to look at him, but Cloud had already pivoted back toward the woods.
When the group stops outside of Nibelheim to talk about how the town used to be, Cloud confronts difficult feelings surrounding his home being completely gone and dead. Luckily, Tifa's there to understand him.

The wolf slammed into the guard, sprawling him onto his back as it fell on top of him. Zack moved in a blur a second later; a gust of wind whipped her hat from her head as something dark bisected the wolf; the creature collapsed and lay still. A flick of the enormous blade- Tifa glanced at the guard and stopped. Cloud Strife lay on the ground, frantically tugging his helmet back into place before he made any move to push the corpse weighing him down away. Somehow he missed the points on his chest where the wolf’s claws had drawn blood. "Hey SOLDIER?" Tifa called. "You want to keep going or should we get this guy some help?"
Cloud did not really want to return to his home with Zack but a chance moment when climbing Mount Nibel with Tifa changes everything.

Summary
Sephiroth finally manages to escape JENOVA's control after one of his many deaths at the hands of Cloud Strife. Determined to make things right he tries to swim further into the life-stream so that JENOVA can't revive him. The Planet has different ideas.
Now ten years old, Sephiroth is determined to take down JENOVA and all the corruption in SHINRA before everything that went wrong in the last timeline occurs. Unfortunately he is short, young, and alone. In order to get access to SHINRA's files and still escape Hojo's clutches young Sephiroth makes an alliance with a Turk who agrees to help him take out JENOVA. Now with access to SHINRA and the chance to breathe Sephiroth begins to make more plans. He is determined to save Angeal and Genesis this time around, and he intends to train Cloud so that he has a back up plan in case JENOVA takes control of him again.
Pragmatic and self-sacrificing to a fault, Sephiroth finds himself unable to avoid the found family, or his friends despite his best efforts to the contrary. Will he be able to defeat JENOVA, save his friends, and the world, or will he fail...again...
