When Sephiroth came to Cloud in any way, it was with the accompaniment of rain. Over the years, this made rain into a trigger for Cloud, who experiences debilitating flashbacks whenever it rains. Tifa couldn't help much, but maybe Sephiroth could fix it.

Suffocated by guilt, he's pushed all of his friends away, turning into a shell of his former self. He spends his life waiting.
He's waiting for the unavoidable moment of Sephiroth return, when he will finally be needed again. When he will do his duty and fight, and protect the Planet one more time.
But until then, he has no point, no purpose. He spends his days in a haze, waiting for time to pass.
Until, at last—Sephiroth returns and Cloud finally feels alive again.

“You know, it's damn rude to enter someone else's place while they're not even there,” Cloud grouses. It's maybe a little ridiculous given that they've been meeting like this for over a year now, but. That unnamed burning anger underneath his skin has to go somewhere.
After tossing his keys on the counter, he walks up to Sephiroth’s side, opens the cupboard above the sink and takes out a glass.
Fills it.
Drains it.
Sephiroth still hasn't said anything, which makes those burning sparks rise again. Except, the moment Cloud whirls around to face him, suddenly arms like steel catch him under the armpits and unceremoniously lift him onto the counter between the fridge and the sink.
“What are y—”
“Cloud.” Because he's ridiculously tall, Sephiroth is still looming over him even in this position. His gaze is as unyielding as his voice as he cups Cloud’s face with one hand and tilts it back, forcing eye contact. “What has happened?”

The Zack Cloud remembered was straight-up handsy. Always there to put a balancing hand to the middle of Cloud's back when he stumbled, or tugging Cloud eagerly along by the hand; casually directing him with a touch on the waist, squeezing his shoulder when Cloud began to tense, knocking their sides together when Zack could feel Cloud’s anxiety starting to spike. And always, always stepping in front of Cloud in battle, unerringly protective.
Zack comes back. He isn't the same.

When Cloud stumbles upon young Sephiroth in the crumbling ruins of Aerith's church, he wants nothing to do with him.
He tries to leave, to put Sephiroth out of his mind and go back to his peaceful existence, but Sephiroth follows him home and inserts himself into his life.
They grow closer over time, but the tension between them remains; it shifts and transforms into a tangible presence, a thread that weaves its way between them, drawing them closer.
When Sephiroth asks for help with something deeply intimate, the thread finally snaps, forcing them to collide.

After sprinkling the seeds throughout the dirt, Aerith covers the well and feeds it with water for the first time. As she’s nearly finished, Tifa goes to help her back into the wheelchair—
—but stops when Aerith bows her head and folds her hands in prayer.
To the lifestream. To Gaia. To the spirits that spared her when she folded like a ragdoll on the stone floor of the Forgotten City, blood pooling beneath her impaled abdomen.
Interspersed with words and phrases from a language that Tifa doesn’t understand, one Aerith only barely speaks because of the ancestral knowledge flowing through her, Aerith asks the lifestream to find this earth and bless it. To return to the land what had been stolen from it by Shinra’s mako reactors. Rising from the dirt, flashes of green and white light coagulate around the well of newly planted roses, answering her prayers.
Following the events of Advent Children, Aerith decides that it's time to begin a new garden at home. It's more difficult for Tifa than she's willing to admit.
