    The security camera hanging from the wall split down the middle, a rubber bullet embedded in the glass screen.

    Jason blinked. Every camera was shattered. One looked to have caved in with the rest of that portion of the ceiling, another studded with shuriken. He tightened his grip on his blades. There weren’t many good reasons why a mercenary would want to rid all sources of evidence in a closed environment.

    Deathstroke kept his right hand on the trigger as his left messed with his helmet’s straps. He unclicked something, and in one angry jerk, tugged off his mask.

    The most emo version of Dick Grayson post-teenage angst era glared at him, empty look in his eyes and empty eye.

    The thing is, Tim wasn’t himself when he was looking for Bruce. In his grief, Tim was Red Robin, and Red Robin was built for solitude. Red Robin crossed lines that Tim Drake wouldn’t even tiptoe on. He was detached and gray and everything Tim had tried not to be as Robin. But now that Bruce is back, and Damian is Robin, and nobody really knows what he’s done- Red Robin is all he has left. And Red Robin was built for solitude.

     

    There’s something wrong with Tim. The Tim Jason knew was poised, snarky, arrogant. A stubborn-as-shit asshole. And, of course, so loyal and committed to the Bat-legacy that Jason wasn’t really sure if the kid had any hobbies outside the suit. This new Tim, this Red Robin, is someone else entirely. Someone who’s one reckless crusade away from getting himself killed.

    And Jason has a few things to say about dead Robins, Red or not.

    Or: After Bruce returns from the time stream, Tim Drake keeps the mantle of Red Robin and throws himself into international cases to avoid going home. Jason runs into him, gets a bad feeling, and follows him to the ends of the earth (literally).

    Dick, admittedly, doesn’t know what the rest of the team was doing because his eyes were glued on the intruder. A bulky man— tall and muscular— stood at the center of the lounge. Dick isn’t sure where exactly to begin describing him. A standard gun was in his hand, obviously the one where the bullet that almost hit Artemis came from, but it was obvious the man had more weapons on his person. He was completely covered, from the tan military style pants to the jacket that was left unzipped, to the shiny red helmet that was only the second most noticeable thing to Dick. The first: a red bat logo printed on the intruder’s chest.

    Dick could not begin to question anything (Who was this man? What was he doing here? Why is a gun and the bat symbol on the same person ?) because his thoughts can and should only be of the ways to take the threat down.

    Tim holds the line. He never leaves well enough alone. When people tell him he can’t, when he’s told to fuck off or give up or run away, he shoves himself a little more firmly into whatever the situation may be. When Batman said he didn’t need a Robin he took up the role anyway, dug his heels in and kept showing up until the ultimatum was clear; Bruce could either train him or let him get killed throwing himself into the fray. When Bruce got lost in the time stream and everyone else thought he was dead, Tim was the one who spent a year god-knows-where trying to find him.

    Jason knows all this. He’s heard the story before, as well as every other story of Tim showing up to stick his nose in everyone’s business until they accept his help. He always gets his way in those situations, no matter how long it takes. Yet Jason can’t help his surprise when Tim starts seeking him out at the end of patrol.
