Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.

Originally, these stories weren't intended to fit together, but they (mostly) do, so now I consider this a sort of miniverse of its own. There may be a few minor inconsistencies here and there, but I generally try to make them work. You will encounter Megan Rapinoe. You will see the same OCs in multiple fics. You will get to journey with them from pre-series to beyond the events established in canon (as of Jan 2026 when Unrivaled has not yet been published).

Shane finally takes it upon himself to get Ilya to quit smoking. (completely and for real this time) Shane’s not the most convincing person on the planet, but he does know how to speak Ilya's language and that language involves his body. He just hopes he can be more addictive than cigarettes.
“I had an idea, though. An idea you might like…you might also hate it.”
Ilya cocked an eyebrow, “Okay?”
“What if, if you really need a cigarette, instead, you use your favourite distraction?”
Ilya scrunched up his face, “What is my favourite distraction?”
“Me…I mean…I thought…right?” Shane instantly second-guessed himself and got embarrassed.
Ilya had a beaming smile, “Yes, you are very good distraction, definitely my favourite.” Ilya brushed a hand against Shane’s cheek and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
Shane beamed at the gesture, “So instead of smoking…if you’re craving a cigarette, instead you can do anything to me you want.”
“Anything I want?” Ilya's eyes widened at the notion.
“Anything you want, but if you fail and you do have a smoke…then you don’t get me at all.”

Shane’s mouth fell open, half grinning with amusement. Did Ilya really think Hayden was in love with him?
“Ilya, Hayden has a wife and four kids, what are you talking abo-”
“How could he not?!” Ilya cut him off. “You are perfect. Perfect son, perfect hockey player, perfect boyfriend, perfect friend!” He spits out, using air quotations to exaggerate the friend part.

Summary
There is a strong scent of antiseptic in the air, the kind that always haunts hospitals and morgues. Ilya thinks it is fitting. He thinks, perhaps, that some vital organ of his is failing irreparably, and he is only waiting for a doctor to call out his time of death.
“You have lost your memories.” It’s not a question. Ilya’s burning hand drops from Shane’s cheek.
“Yeah,” Shane says easily. “Wait, shit, did no one tell you?”
“Is it temporary.” Ilya’s voice is hoarse, pleading. “This memory loss, is it… tell me that it is temporary.” Please, please, God. I know I promised to give anything up, but-
Shane looks at Ilya with wide eyes. “They don’t know,” he says gently. He seems to be catching onto Ilya’s distress despite the drugs in his system.
Ilya feels cold all over. Yes, any moment now, they will cover him with a white sheet and take him away.
Shane's concussion in S01E05 leaves him missing his memories from the last decade. Ilya is now the only person in the world who knows the truth about him and Shane, and is forced to question whether to burden Shane with their complicated relationship or to walk away.

Ilya didn’t even look at him as he delivered his final words, his voice cold and devoid of any emotion. Shane waited for a few silent seconds before he gave up, realising Ilya wasn’t going to change his mind. He pulled open the door, hovering in the doorway, waiting for words that never came. His feet refused to move, his heart half hoping Ilya would call his name. But there was only silence. And now that the silence was turned on him, he had no right to hate how much it hurt.
This was exactly what he’d done months ago - turned away, shut down, left Ilya sitting there alone, confused... hurt. Back then, Shane had told himself it was easier this way. Cleaner.
Now he knew what it felt like to be the one left behind.

Shane walked away from Ilya after the tuna melt incident.
But what if Shane never turned up at the All Stars Game in Tampa?
What if that moment had never existed?
Would it have been easier if they’d never become anything at all?
