Have you ever been mind to mind with another? Not empathy or mind-speak, but joined at a level with no barriers. Your every thought is exposed to another person. Even those you don’t admit to yourself. The flash of what you might say or do to another simply because your adrenaline, or other hormones are flooding your body?
Some think it a blissful experience. Perhaps, between two people who are prepared, who see no reason to hide a part of themself from another. But realize that the normal person is flooded with self doubt, regret, and fear of failure more often than they are flooded with happiness, joy, satisfaction, release. There is a reason that Vulcan’s don’t suggest mind-melds for no reason. They tend to ask, in more than one way, whether the other party consents to it. It is also why humans who consent to it are trained to erect walls.
Because when it is unwelcome, unexpected or forced there is no wall. There is no word for such a thing. Rape pales by comparison. Seeing another’s every thought, unprepared, can cause mental instability, it can even change who a person is at their core. To be exposed at that level to someone one does not trust, without consent. It is the worst sin of all.

Summary
Tali supports the turian’s weight as Shepard moves forward, but she can’t hear what she’s saying through the noise — her focus is on Garrus, the blue and silver of his armor charred black and smoking, red spots where the metal is melted and still burning from the proximity to the explosion. It takes all of her willpower to ignore the pain of her own burns and keep him from surging forward to follow Shepard back into the fire.
