John Constantine was seeking atonement. Giovanni Zatara had recruited him into a life of lies, deceit, and unforgivable sins. John was trapped by a spell to keep him from ever telling Zatanna the truth.
To get Giovanni out of Hell and break the spell, John asks for a favour from Lucifer. The Devil isn't prepared to witness and find love in its most desperate forms: from this wayward occultist, a witch with a paternal vengeance, and angels fighting to keep control over fate.
