Jisu looks up at the overpass. She thinks that, where she sees the cars, the monotony, the way it’s so easy to slip into letting your own life pass by while you are forced to simply sit and watch, Minhee sees the night sky behind the bridge, shining with stars even through the smog and light of the city. Minhee sees the way the trees along the edge of the road lean into each other, like lovers, and she watches the moon until it hurts her eyes.
Jisu wishes she was more like Minhee, a little bit.

Summary
I highly recommend Hiroko Yoda’s “Ikigai” vs. Ikigai on the ways in which American (or, to be fair, Western) marketing distorts concepts. The problem is not a new one; readers of Sartre will note that there is a seriousness in American interpretations of his Existentialism that is more playful or perhaps ironic in the original.
What I find fascinating is that now the Japanese government has now seized upon the word, reverse importing it back into Japan as though it were a new concept, right along with the ikigai-astrology chart. You might be asking yourself, how is that possible? I certainly was, when I first saw it.
This bears examination.

“Jisu, you’re home,” Minhee says simply, eyes narrow, glimmering like the stars overhead. Jisu finds herself lost in there, an entire universe too big for her to comprehend. Yet, if she were to reach forward, just lean over the center console of the car, she could hold the entire universe in her hands like it were something so simple.
The static in her brain stays constant, a reminder of the flush underneath her skin. Her body trembles where she sits, unable to be still with the silence stretching between them.
“I'm in love with you, Minhee unnie.”
Or, Jisu falls in love with her best friend’s older sister and can never quite figure out how to move on.

And that’s how they ended up in the car on this random road trip; Jisung driving, Seungmin passenger, Hyunjin right, Chan left, and…
Jeongin middle.The man must’ve complained about forty times, all with the same degree of pettiness, just in slightly different words and tones. That was, until Jisung seemingly had enough and started blasting his music even louder.
“Yah! Hyung, you know hearing loss is a thing, right?!”
