1887. Yet more cases as the duo settle into Baker Street. As well as the famous 'Sophy Anderson' case (the politician, the light-house and the trained cormorant) there is another murderous sibling, another serial killer, the scandal at the Nonpareil Club, a not-stolen dagger, a disappearing dancer, a body in a wardrobe, an innocent murderer, the case Holmes solved by (not) winding a dead man's watch, a man killed while wearing the wrong scarf, the largest item Holmes was ever asked to find. Holmes is not at all jealous of Watson's friendship with the mysterious Doctor Nonus Hugh, while the doctor suffers more embarrassment over another incriminating photograph. Then a curious countdown is followed by trouble once more rearing its ugly head, and for Watson a second flight abroad looms – except that this time, he will not go alone.
Oh yes. And Sherlock ends up on John's bed.

Together (if not 'together together' as Holmes's terrifying mother somehow assumes!) they face a barrage of cases in one of the busiest times in the detective's long career, featuring a blackmailed friend, a not-stolen coronet, bigotry in Baker Street, two cold crimes grown hot again, a threatened inheritance, the scheming Baron Maupertuis, an Irish violinist, a paradol chamber and some deadly clothing. Holmes comes up with arguably the cruellest and most effective anti-crime tactic - thus far - while Watson, not for the last time, is horrendously embarrassed by a photograph.

1885-1886. Even being a thousand miles apart cannot stop the troubles piling up for these two. Watson reaps the whirlwind of a less than advisable decision concerning a forgetful female bed occupant, while for Holmes it is on to questionable statues, unhappy Vikings, painted sheep, dangerous strippers, a much-desired trophy, faked deaths at sea, verbal legerdemain, a shaven swimmer, a terrifying woman in a kilt and nuts in a field. A gruesome case showing what happens when the justice system fails is followed by extremes of acting, street-fighters and large noses, before the detective encounters one of the most terrifying men that he will meet in his long and illustrious career. Once he has stopped shaking there is another meeting with an old friend, a trained killer, an exploding barn (complete with an unwelcome familial encounter) and a mistaken journalist who really goes too far before Holmes can return to London and a happy reunion with the man he.... values as a friend.

Then he encounters a worryingly carefree runner, an old friend, some Moscow cows, an English kilt, a possibly vengeful ghost, a Biggar man, an unrepentant truth-teller, some Lowland Highlanders and a Gala gala. He also gets his third big shock in three years, but at least Watson is all right.
