It was weird for false contractions to happen so often. In fact, they WEREN'T supposed to be frequent; only something that happened once and then didn't happen again for some time. Lance was starting to think there was something wrong and began to panic. However, as he realized they had been happening since last night, less time between them and hurting more each time one happened, he was rooted to his seat with a different kind of fear.
“...these aren't Braxton Hicks...” he whispered to no one in particular.

“Lance, are you there?” Keith asked.
Shakily, Lance ran his fingers over the charred fabric. Pain shot through him and he hissed in an attempt to quell it.
“Uh, yeah. I think,” Lance licked his lips, “I think I got shot.”

“When are you going to be back? Kosmo’s going to start chewing your shoes up and I’m not going to stop her.” Kosmo isn’t one for chewing shoes but she does keep staring at Matt’s side of the bed and then pawing at the covers before huffing when she lays down.
“Probably the day after tomorrow. Olia’s got to go over some of the earlier missions.” Keith hears the announcements of the Olkari shopping mall and wonders how many video games Matt’s going to come back with this time. “I think I’m still, like, legally dead on some planets which isn’t ideal but is pretty cool. I’m like a zombie, or a vampire.”
“On that topic, Allura and Romelle recommended a horror film the other day and they keep bothering me about watching it.”
“As long as you promise to hold my hand at the scary bits, babes.”
“Don’t I always?” Keith walks into the changing room and sees Antok ready to go. “I’ve got to go, I’m about to get my ass kicked in the training room.”
“Okay, love you.” Matt makes loud, wet smooching noises through the phone. “Don’t forget to send me pictures if you get all hot and sweaty.”

He’s mad. Irrational and untamed anger boils inside him, deep in his stomach, faint empty promises from Keith filling his head, repeating themselves like a broken record over and over again and it only helps to fuel the fire inside him.
‘Alright,’ was Keith's answer, soft and quiet but the meaningful power behind them bounced around them that night, ‘We’re a team, you’re right, no more rash decisions.’
(The one where Keith leaves without a warning and the team is left behind without a leader once again and Lance takes it upon himself to hold on to the small family he has left, at least until Keith comes back, if he ever does.)
