Namjoon throws away the rabbit because it reminds him too much of how he killed the rabbit-like boy. But thankfully the wolves used to take refuge in this temple and left behind many supplies that Namjoon stuffs into his backpack. There’s more than enough food to survive the harshest period of winter; Namjoon won’t have to hunt for another month, all thanks to them. “Thank you,” he says to the empty air, not really expecting a reply.
(Thank you, say the ghosts of five young wolves who choose to stay behind and guard their savior instead of enjoying their afterlife, though the said savior cannot hear them.)
That night, Namjoon finds more stories about the wolves in the temple. One of them was a talented artist; vivid and realistic sketches of faces and animals and flowers cover the floor. Someone wrote love poems that look more like song lyrics into the walls. Clothes that are so old that it’s clear they were kept around not to be worn but to evoke certain memories. Unused pistols with no bullets. Cat food and a pet’s bowl.
They were peaceful people. But peaceful is a weakness, and that weakness got them killed.
Namjoon sleeps deeply on a bench that has been made into a bed and doesn’t dream, a gift he’ll greatly appreciate once he wakes up.
(Several teams of hunters pass by the temple that night, but they are distracted by phantom movements and led away by one of the wolves’ ghosts. “You’re having way too much fun, Beomie,” the boy whose neck Namjoon snapped reprimands lightly.)
After he wakes up, Namjoon finds a framed photograph of the five young wolves together, smiling brightly at the camera. Without a second thought, Namjoon puts that into his backpack as well.
He sets off with a new destination, a new reason to stop running and hiding and start making a change. A destination that’s not a place yet, because no hero ever knows where to go when the journey has just started anyway. A reason that gives the moment with meaning its meaning.
He has hunters he has to kill. Five boys he has to avenge. A certain Min Yoongi he has to find.
