Summary
The official reports say it was the Joker, that in a last fit of hysterical madness, burned down the warehouse with his broken son and broken wife and him laughing as the flames rose. Then he died too. And Batman resuscitated him.
That left the question: who took the blame? The Joker, for killing hundreds of people, him included? Batman, for never truly stopping him? Damian, for never training him to face the madman?
In the end, Tim takes the blame himself.

Summary
The dark fire twists and rises, orienting on the Gotham walls. It seems to be aimed for a point right in front of the battlements where Bruce and Damian stand, defenseless while casting their own spell. The black flames blast forward, closing in on the closest thing to a family Tim has left.
Like hell.
Tim knows exactly what he needs to do. Just as the black, corrupt hellfire approaches the village walls, he drops into a dive, closing his wings tightly around his body to plummet faster. He’s got this—he’s so close—
As he falls, what sounds strangely like grief-stricken cries of denial in his father’s and brother’s voices reach his ears, but that’s not possible. He must be mistaken. As the burning, excruciating balefire surrounds him, burning the very tears from his eyes, Tim’s heart twists in painful satisfaction. Now the others will be able to save Gotham and defeat Ra’s.
I did it, Bruce. Even if you never really wanted me to be part of your family, I hope… I made you proud.

Summary
Bruce is a mess when Tim first shows up. He's ruthless and relentless. Certainly not the Batman that Tim knows. So, Tim decides to step in. He'll become Robin. He won't replace Jason. That's something he knows he'll never be able to do. But he'll fulfill the need for a Robin.
Tim knows he's nothing more than a placeholder. Still, he wishes that Batman would accept him. He wishes Bruce would accept him. He can dream. He does dream. But he always wakes up. And he wakes up to a Batman that wants his son back.
Or: Tim fulfills the need for a Robin and takes the brunt of Batman at his worse. Later down the line, Bruce wonders if he'll ever be able to fix the damage he's done to Timothy Drake.
