Being different in the 80s could be a death sentence. Hawkins was supposed to be a fresh start, but that fresh start could only last so long as that small, close-minded town didn't catch a whiff of something they didn't understand. That was why Steve kept quiet, kept his head cockily up, and did what was expected of him. He wasn't here to make waves.
Jonathan had always been an outcast and would've been even if he had kept certain aspects of himself hidden. He was tired of hiding and pretending. He knew there were others like him and he would find the other outcasts and make a community whether they liked it or not. No one deserved to feel as alone as he did.

But when said barista starts showing up at his work, asking for stranger and stranger tattoos each time, Andrew finds himself growing interested, and enjoying their little push and pull game of fucking each other over.

Or maybe find a coffee shop looking for live music and meet a handsome, mysterious singer covered in scars?
This fic is inspired by the musical Next to Normal. Specifically, the song 'Everything Else'. All chapter names will be song titles and I highly encourage you to check the musical out. It's one of my favorites!
