The first thing Grace noticed about Stratt when she wasn't working was that she was longingly fixated on the sky. The second was that she never actually flew. He wasn't even sure he'd seen her wings not folded tightly against her back. She wasn't the only person with wings on the ship, far from it, but she was certainly the strangest about it.
Or; Grace and Stratt are part of the 30% of the population who have wings. Stratt's situation is made all the more complicated for it.

To any other person, getting sick in this situation was to be expected. Nobody can run on less than an hour of sleep every night for almost a full year, no matter how important they are. Unfortunately for Stratt, she is too important. She'd felt the growing pressure on her shoulders for weeks, and knew it was only a matter of time until she collapsed, but she wouldn't let herself rest until then. If she hit her limit, she could justify it.

She could not believe his audacity. To ask her to go on the ship and replace trained and seasoned astronauts just because he has one wish? Because he was scared? On the other hand, she was chosen to lead for a reason, learning a new skill wasn’t foreign to her. She immediately shut down that side of her thoughts. She looked into his eyes and swallowed when she saw he meant it. She really didn’t want to drug him but she knew she had to get him on that ship. As much as she wanted to, she couldn’t manipulate him into thinking that she will go when she won’t. ‘If you won’t’, her traitorous brain supplies. She scolds herself again.
She prides herself from not showing emotions and she is happy being the heartless bitch if that’s what people want her to be but she draws the line here to trick him for something so permanent. No, she has to be honest now. She swallows again. She cannot believe she is considering this.
