Summary
Shane Hollander has spent years building a quiet, careful life for himself and his daughter. Shane Hollander is just trying to survive NYU biochemistry, hockey practice, and the graveyard shift at 7-Eleven. He's too exhausted to notice that his new regular customer is Russian mafia, or that Ilya's interest in him goes beyond terrible coffee and cookies.
When Ilya hands him a $10,000 designer scarf and matching gloves, Shane doesn't panic. He sells them for next month's rent. Any normal person would be terrified. Instead, Shane uses the leftover money to buy a Hello Kitty watch, pastel pink, childish, utterly incongruous with the danger circling him. He wears it to his next night shift without irony or apology.
Ilya notices immediately. He is fascinated.

Monty’s not supposed to think. He’s just supposed to do. To obey. Do what the Creator and Edwin and Charles want of him.
Monty's fingers skate across the keys, plucking notes and stringing them together. The resulting sound is a bit discordant. A bit off. No real riffs save that which feels natural-
Nothing should feel natural to Monty. He is the very definition of artificial.
And yet, when he looks up and sees the way that Charles and Edwin look at him, the curve of Edwin’s soft smile beneath his tinted glasses, the fondness in Charles’ eyes-
Something is happening inside of him. Some sort of reaction, but it is not the sort of reaction that is coded into an android.
It almost seems human.
(In a high-tech world where students rely on being sponsored by rich patrons, biotech leaders Edwin and Charles are finally sponsoring their first patronee, Monty, pretty and smart and too easy to fall for.
There's just one hiccup: Monty is not a student at all, but rather M-1989, an android sent by one of their competitors.
And while Monty is developing what can't possibly be feelings for Charles and Edwin, there might be a failsafe that no one knows about implanted in his coding.)

Summary
Joel turns and peers cautiously down the alley. In the fading light he can make out three figures, teenage boys if he had to guess, in a semi-circle around a kneeling figure. Their head turns and Joel catches sight of a brown ponytail between the boys’ legs, a flash of a knife gripped in a hand.
One of them steps forward and kicks her in the shoulder, sending her sprawling backwards. She scrambles back to her feet, knife outstretched in front of her, teeth bared. If she wasn’t so goddamn small, Joel would think she was more than capable of handling herself against these guys, but they’ve each got probably half a foot and fifty pounds on her, and he finds himself walking closer.

Joel’s plumb out of luck, it seems, because running after the dog is the little girl. She’s out of breath, still halfway laughing, and for a few seconds she doesn’t notice him. In those seconds, her face is wide open in a grin, dark hair wild and posture loose. She can’t be more than thirteen, maybe a small fourteen, and she’s clumsy in the way teenagers are right after a growth spurt. There’s a knife in Joel’s chest, the one that’s been there for twenty years, and it twists.
(or, joel accidentally gets a dog. apparently, the dog comes with a mouthy fourteen-year-old kid, and maybe also a reason for living again.)
