Flashpoint Act I: Kindling by BloodInTheTides

Summary
Nearly a year into her role as the Southern Water Tribe’s ambassador, Katara has accomplished what her counterpart from the North could not: securing reparations from the Fire Nation court. But when sabotage, scandal, and colonial unrest threaten the fragile peace of a post-war world, she finds herself pulled deeper and deeper into the viper’s nest of Fire Nation politics…and closer to its ruler. As rumors swirl and tempers flare between the Ambassador and the Fire Lord, Katara finds a helping hand, and unexpected solace, in the brother of one of her students. In a nation built on blood and lies, she must decide: how far is she willing to go to protect those who cannot protect themselves…and what will it cost her?
This is the first act of a five-act story. Act I is complete and comes to, what I consider to be, a narratively satisfying conclusion. I will be posting the remaining chapters of Act I every day during Zutara Month 2025.

Summary
"We're going to be alcoholics by the time we're thirty," Sokka sighed.
"You think we'll live to be thirty?" Zuko asked, honestly thrilled. Sokka had pretty good instincts. Perhaps Zuko should reevaluate his long term goals. He could start by having long term goals.
A more likely alternative was that Sokka was just a hopeless optimist. It just went to show, you never truly saw another man until you stood shoulder to shoulder against a fleet of war balloons intent on raining death upon the city you loved.
Zuko was just a normal guy with normal interests. He liked theatre, burglary, crotchety ostrich horses, watching the Blind Bandit crush her opponents in a glorious display of skill and violence... just your standard banished prince things. It wasn't his fault he kept stumbling into rebellions and uncovering long-buried secrets. Fine, maybe freeing the prisoners was on him, but he was completely innocent of all other treason. Zuko was his father's loyal son. He'd never betray his nation.
Or:
Uncle Iroh took a more creative approach to fostering Zuko's appreciation of other cultures. Now it's everyone's Problem.- Language:

Gorgeous! What an incredible story. The characters are all incredible, the premise is fascinating, and the plot is beautiful. All in all, an excellent series, and marvellously readable in small pieces, which is always nice to find. A million thanks to the lovely author, as I suspect I shall go on to reread this story on bitty days in the future.

Summary
There's an owl. It's not a cat-owl or a badger-owl or even an owl-deer. It's an owl, it's huge, and it's not pleased to see them.
"Humans. What are you doing in my library?"
Zhao bows deeply to it. "Honoured spirit, I am a humble seeker of knowledge. I had heard of the wonders of your library and wished to see it for myself."
What follows is the most nauseating combination of flattery and lies Zuko has heard for a long time. Not that Zuko has the right to accuse an honourable Fire Nation citizen of lying. And he should want the spirit to believe Zhao. Right?
Right. Anyway. Something something knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Honoring the spirits that keep our sailors safe and bear us where we need to go.
"And your companion?" the owl asks. Wan Shi Tong, whose name literally means the guy who knows everything. And he can't hear what utter moosebullshit Zhao is spouting? Really?
"Him?" Zhao says. He pats Zuko's shoulder, and Zuko grits his teeth. "He's my assistant. A bit simple, but he can follow orders. I'll ensure he doesn't trouble you."
Or,
Zuko goes to the library. He ends up staying for three years.

[“Here.” The boy holds out a cigarette for him. “You look like you need it.”
Sokka takes it with a grateful smile and is just about to get his lighter when the boy holds out his finger with a small flame flickering above it.
“Oh.” He brings the tip of his cigarette above the flame to light it. “Thanks.”
“No problem.” The boy jerks his head back towards the porch, a clear invitation for Sokka to join him, then he turns around and walks back to the bench. Sokka follows him without a word.]
OR
Sokka’s life slips into meaninglessness after Yue’s death. Nothing seems fun or exciting anymore, he mostly just allows himself to be dragged along with whatever his friends want to do in a desperate attempt to find something to hold onto, though it’s all mostly futile.
Then he meets Zuko, who’s moved into Yue’s old place. Zuko, who’s interesting and strange and kind. Who doesn’t judge Sokka even when he probably should. Who maybe gets it in a way no one else around him does.-

Summary
Zuko thinks the Avatar's collection of misfits is behaving weirdly. They're constantly acting like they know something he doesn't, like they know him when they definitely shouldn't, and they're constantly trying to get him to join them! Which he would never do!
(For some reason, Sokka, Katara, and Aang have memories of growing old, and all the steps it took to get there, but have no idea what triggered it other than breaking Aang out of the iceberg. Naturally, they want things to be better, but teenage Zuko, still in his angry yelling phase? Adorable. They can work with this.)

Summary
Zuko is four years old when Azula comes into the world screaming. The young boy’s attention was drawn to the little wriggling bundle in Ursa’s arms. Cocking his head in curiosity, Zuko crawled closer to try and get a better look. A warm chuckle wrapped around his little form as his mother reached forward to present the little bundle before him. “This is your little sister.” As Ursa spoke, the cloth was peeled away to reveal a baby swaddled within the soft blanket. The tiny babe is pressed gently into the arms of her older brother, his arms positioned for him to support her head. Amber flashed behind tiny eyelids in the midday sun and Zuko found that he couldn’t tear his eyes away… This is his little sister? “She’s really mine mama?” Tenderly she carded a tired hand through her now eldest child’s hair. “Yes my little drake, she is yours.” Zuko stared at the tiny baby with rapt attention. She was so tiny in his arms, He was only five years old but she was just so… Beautiful. Zuko knew from that moment on he would do anything for his little sister. She’s his. Mother had said so.
So, this is more of an outline than anything else. Ive been really inspired by MuffinLance and just had to write this! Please Enjoy!

Summary
Cultural Reciprocity (n.)
The dynamic or material exchange of knowledge, values, and perspectives between two or more different cultures.“In the Southern Water Tribe,” Sokka begins in a scholarly tone—like he’s about to recite an oral history, “warriors wear wolf-tails, and keep the hair on the crown of their heads pulled back.”
“Kids and bachelors keep the sides of their hair short. Since Bato witnessed my ice-dodging ceremony when I was sixteen, I’ve been considered an adult for a while now. Growing my hair out is symbolic of maturity,” And this is where Sokka breaks eye contact with Zuko for the first time, looking back down at the table and picking up his cup of tea (iced, which he insists is a Tribe thing but still makes Zuko cringe) to cradle between his wide palms. And then he opens his mouth, and in six words freezes Zuko’s heart and rattles him down to the core—
“And of my intent to marry.”
“Marry,” Zuko repeats dumbly.A/N: This fic spends a lot of time exploring the lore of the world of A:TLA, particularly its ties to real-world Asian and Indigenous cultures. It also happens to be a love story, too.

Summary
Zuko knelt before his father on the day of Ozai's coronation and said, "I am your loyal servant. I do not fear being burned."
Zuko remembers, vividly, bowing before the court, bowing before his father, and wishing he could say something else. Something like, I will honor you, or respect you, or even obey you.
He wishes there was some other way to prove loyalty, some other way to prove love.
He wishes he could have said something true, but he has always, always feared being burned.
Or
After escaping the Boiling Rock, Zuko and Hakoda have a discussion about duty, loyalty, and love.
