Summary
This first fic covers the three years before Johanna's reaping, showing how she becomes the girl who won the 71st games.
Like many families in Panem, the Masons deal with the horrors of the Hunger Games by ignoring them as much as possible. The eldest child of the family, Johanna, knows she wouldn't stand a chance if her name was chosen at the reaping. However, when she befriends the new girl in town, Johanna starts to learn a few tricks for keeping herself safe. Maybe, with enough practice, she wouldn't be so hopeless in the arena after all?

For this Quarter Quell, all tributes must be relatives of those who rebelled.
Harper Smith's parents told her not to worry. The Smiths have been outstanding citizens for generations. They're good friends with the peacekeepers. They took no part in the rebellion. They certainly aren't related to anyone who did.
So why, then, did Harper receive a letter saying she was in the reaping pool? Why does it say she's related to Johanna Mason, a woman she's never met?
Can she, a rich merchant girl, even win this?
